They really don't. It's negligible at best. Besides, Shocks have a lot of armor, they can shrug it off.
The maximum damage dealing range is set at the maximum distance of 3, when it used to be like 8 or something like that.
Shocktroops with the PPSh, M3 Grease Guns, and Thompsons were adjusted to have a max damage dealing distance set at 10.
Essentially, Relic made it so that units armed with SMG's would be in max damage dealing range at a greater distance than what Sturmpioneers armed with Assault Rifles could reach.
So Sturmpioneers are effectively stuck in doing perpetually minimum to moderate damage because their max damage dealing range is punching distance of 3. They are literally outranged by SMG's. It's kinda sad and kinda funny at the same time.
Why di you consider only range of 10? It's not like we have only 10 range in game. SP outclass them at mid range.
For example 20 range. 19>6>4. I prefer unit with lower DPS at close range but with linear damage so unit is useful at all ranges over hug-range units. They are more universal. |

Pak43 - 500MP, shooting through everything all the time.
17 Pounder - 400MP 75F - can shoot through only with ability + it will be quite easy to deny it when consider it does not shoot through everything + Ostheer Air abilites, Stuka, Sturmtiger, MHT etc.

No matter with Rangers or something else, USF need somekind of infantry at frontline other than Rifles and Paras since you already have 3/Rifles + Officer by 3CPs and calling another squad is not always best solution.
So Rifles, Paras and AssaultEngis (hardly frontlines but not bad DPS so let's keep them here).
OST: Grens, PanzerGrens, AssaultGrens, Osttruppen, Stormtroopers.
Sov: Cons, Penals, Shocks, Guards, Partisants
OKW: SP, Volks, Fusiliers, Jaegers, Fals, Obers.
Rifles, AssaultEngis and Paras look miserable when compre to other faction in terms of options you have. |

The jp4 can only counter the sherman the m 5 quad does not only counter the aa track but also the whole army german army.
You already have blob of Volks/Fusiliers, MG, Leig, so you don't need more AI, while well managed Sherman can wipe each squad one by one if you don't have any hard counter. |
