Snipers are wonderful but you need to be very careful with them. Early game you can put them in scout cars to give them a bit more mobility (which equates to safety), but you'll want to put them back on foot once the Germans have upgraded scout cars and/or tanks.
Mortars are the other good counter to MG42s. If you already have three or so Conscript squads and your opponent is relying on MG42s, it's not a bad idea to a build a mortar first as soon as you finish tier 2, though you will want a Maxim as well.
Most importantly, whichever tier you choose, don't rely on Conscripts to counter MG42s unless you are seriously spamming them (which doesn't work on restricted maps |
Would people please post using proper paragraphs and capitalization? Reading some of these posts is painful.
Some of you have no regard for objective discourse. The point was that Germany acknowledges and vilifies its Nazi past while Russia defends its past actions as heroic and chooses to ignore the negative parts. It doesn't seem sensible that modern Russians should care so much about defending terrible actions committed nearly 70 years ago. A willingness to criticize yourself and your group (ethnicity, nation, religion, etc.) is a mark of a mature and rational mind. Blindly defending groups that you feel connected to just makes you look like a fanatic.
I also wonder whether all of the people complaining actually paid attention while playing the game. One comment on the Polygon article said a mission depicted Soviet soldiers burning down a Russian house with civilians in it with a flamethrower. No such thing is in CoH2. The houses you burn down in mission 2 are part of a village that was already evacuated and the intention is to deny the advancing Germans resources and shelter.
This seems to be a case of bandwagoning following the complaints of a few vocal people who distorted the narrative of CoH2 by cherry-picking the things that would be offensive to Russians and potentially exaggerating them. I can't see how an objective look at the game can conclude that the Soviet soldiers are depicted negatively (they are not) or that the Russian people are depicted negatively (they are not). The only things depicted negatively are the actions of two Soviet officers and Stalin, and one of those officers is redeemed in the end. This is so overblown. |
If you really hate SU-85s that much, just pick Jaeger Armor for the Elefant or one of the Pak 43 commanders. This discussion is silly. |
I understand your argument, but I think there was just very little attention paid to the German perspective in the campaign rather than any attempt to make the Germans look neutral or good. There was no discussion of civilian-related atrocities on either side, and I don't think that sort of thing needs to be included in an action-oriented video game.
The only real difference between the depictions of the Soviets and Germans in game is in how the officers of each faction treat their men. And it seems quite historically accurate that the Soviets were far worse in this respect. I didn't get the sense that the Soviet soldiers themselves were bad, if anything they were quite heroic. The officers and leaders are the ones you come to dislike. |
Great guide!
One comment about Trip Wire Flares: I haven't seen them used very often, but I'm fairly sure that they kill a single infantryman when detonated. This is a reasonable trade-off for 10 munitions, especially late game. I would definitely pay that much to kill a vet 2/3 Grenadier or Panzergrenadier. I wonder how effective it would be to spam Trip Wire. |
Good list!
Marcus Car
A Clown Car with Guards Rifle troops inside, used to hunt down enemy light vehicles.
Do you think we could stop using this expression? Nothing against Marcus, it's just silly to name a commonly used unit after a player. It'd be fine to say Marcus pioneered its use, or something like that. |
Biggest problem with it imo, is it gets destroyed very easily by on/off-map artillery. I often wish I'd got an Elefant instead :/
Against incendiary artillery you just need a nearby command post bunker or a halftrack. Not much you can do against bombing run, but it is only 120 MP more than a Pak 40! |
I was just about to post this! Great game, watching the replay shows me so much, lol. Toward the end I kept thinking you had Conscripts hidden everywhere to throw AT grenades which kept me playing conservatively. Squads getting destroyed by flames before they can faust or on retreat is no fun . |
One of his pak crews was at 100% 4 men until the su-85 took half of them out.
No, a Soviet Howitzer was firing at the road while the Paks moved up and took out two crewmen. |
Is the bulletin really the problem? I think MG42s pin squads WAY too quickly in general. |
