I did not look close enough to the map stats at first, but looking deeper:

The 1v1 map pool seems to be the most balanced for plays at the moment. Casually browsing SPECTATE, I see this as well. Most maps are being played and the ratio from least played to most played is pretty close. 2272(most) to 1387(least) games played. Almost a 2:1 ratio.

The 4v4 map pool is the farthest off due to community hate for Vielsalm. Here we have 4903(most) to 876(least) games played. Which is almost a 5:1 ratio.

It guess it could be argued that the 1v1 maps are closer because they are ALL bad. But the top few maps get a lot of love so I would disagree.

As we speak there are several mappers working on new 1v1 maps. But we really could use more 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 maps.

I think Wuffya said he had a plan for a 2v2 and 4v4 possibly.
Kpens new 1v1 could be made into a 2v2 map.
RickieRifle is working his magic on a 1v1, maybe stamp it into a 2v2?

If anyone in the community has any thoughts or wishes, check those maps out and speak your mind.

1: I am looking for the used color for the ground of the map "8p North African Desert" made by Orklord. I really like this beautiful painting for the ground of the map and would love to use it for my own african map in creation.

Since you already have the map, you want to download the COH2 Map Extractor. Then you can open the map and see how everything was done.

The hard part is figuring out which map is is. It will be in your My computer directories as something like:
My Documents\My Games\Company of Heroes 2\mods\scenarios\subscriptions

But the name of the map will be some random number. You can tell Windows to open these binary files in WordPad and you can see the name of the map in the file.

Sometimes you can check the date teh file was uploaded to Steam and match that with the file date on your PC.

Once you figure out the map file, drag and Drop it into the map extractor program. A folder will be created in the directory with the raw (UnZipped) map files. Then you can open it in the WorldBuilder.

2: How can you change the sky color, e.g. set the sun to late afternoon?

The sky color is setup in the main menu under SCENARIO\ATMOSPHERE PROPERTIES.
This dialog box has setups for lighting, fog, etc. You want to adjust the settings under SUNLIGHT, then you can copy (duplicate) those settings to Soldier and Vehicle light.

This will adjust the lighting. To get the sky to look like the physical sky you want, you need to select a SKY MODEL from the SKY section of the dialog. This is the sky box textures you see when panning your camera to see the sky.

I still dont understand how this unabalnces a map.

Are you trolling here? We just gave you several examples.

IN DEPTH EXAMPLE:
Lets say you make a small narrow 1v1 map that is very open like your desert example. The enemy is soviet and spams maxims. You are OKW and have NO counters to MGs for 4 minutes of the game. Everywhere you move, you run into a maxim and get suppressed. You get pushed into your base, game over.

To balance that map, the mapper needs to add a lot of sight blockers such as hedges, dead buildings, etc. So OKW units can get around a wall of MGs.

If you add too many sight blockers, OKWs mainline infantry (Volks) will get rekt by allied infantry that is much stronger close-mid range.

And maps should be asymetrical.

The most balanced maps would be symmetrical. But symmetrical is boring to look at and does not feel like a real setting. So it needs to be as symmetrical as it can be, while still feeling 'realistic' to play on.


STATISTICAL EXAMPLE

Here are some map statistics for 1v1 that shows which factions are strongest on which maps.

In the chart above, you can see how certain maps favor certain factions.

If a map looks super balanced in the chart,it may because it is NOT symmetric. And the map favors one spawn over another.

Did you notice any performance drops or different mouse performance, etc?

This is a good question. More pixels = slower FPS. 4k = 4 HD screens so you would expect 1/4th the frame rates. But there are a lot of things that affect the FPS, so it is not an equal ratio. Especially in COH2, which seems CPU heavy.

When I went from 1080 to 4K, I upgraded my videocard as well. But I still run 1080 95% of the time. Going from a GeForce 1060 3GB to a GeForce 1070ti 8GB made almost no difference in FPS for me. But I think I am a special case (as always). Most top streamers are running GeForce 1080.

When reading reviews about videocards, most call the GeForce 1060 an 1080P card. Saying you need more than this speed to play above 1080p resolutions. I am not sure about AMD cards, but I would guess an RX570 is similar to Geforce 1060? RX580 is probably more like a 1070? Maybe need to get into a VEGA series to match a GeForce 1080?

Another anecdote, when running Windows 8, the OS had no issues when changing resolutions for HD to 4K and back. I usually run 60Hz refresh rate. But Windows 10 loses its mind, and I have to dig thru settings to return the refresh rate to 60, every time I change the resolution. Win10 switches my 1080/60 setting to 1080/30 when I come back from 4k. And it likes to make the 4k monitor run at 50Hz. Win10 sucks. Bad. Like really bad. Going back to Win8 soon
