Made more complicated by the fact that pryo Tommies gain +10 sight range ( 45m) and should gain an extra +10 with Vet 1 whilst garrisoned ( hence 55m ~= Vickers Vet 1 range) but don't.
Building a trench about 20m out is effective, very effective. Also then allows the IS to advance whilst the Vickers covers from the trench. |
I agree that popcap and reinforce costs are major parts of a units actual cost.
In fact I factored in 10 reinforcement and popcap costs on a comparison I did on the dps spreadsheet thread. Sturms were head and shoulders ahead on that basis... |

Yes they had ambush. 4 man because
a) It shows the relative strength between models, ie shows that Sturms are remarkably similar, and scale better, to the UKF's elite doctrinal infantry. Not bad for a non doc cheaper starting unit.
b) Mobile assault is meta, few people use Vanguard and very few use the actual Commando commander. Cost per model is 110 in 2 out of 3 commanders, infiltration are only nerfed in terms of their demo charge.
c) The price of a commando squad in Vanguard is indeed 350MP, however the requirments are greater than the other two commanders. You need 3CP plus 540 MP + 350MP to gain a Commando squad in Vanguard. The manpower requirements at that stage of the game add up to 4 or 5 minutes worth, pushing the appearance of Commandos back.
OKW are meant to be powerful in the early game and with highly specialised and aggressive units. Therefore I don't have a problem with Sturms being early game close assault specialists. This however puts their abilities in the mid and late game, particularly with high Vet, under the spotlight. As too their mid range potential which appears to be out of whack with all other close combat infantry and over performs compared to their cost.

Pak43 will shoot straight through a house etc, 17 pdr merely hits the house. |

That's fine, and I believe you but the game isn't balanced for 2v2 and up. Emplacements are trash in 1v1. Maybe more of an eye should be cast to the multiplayer games but that isn't Relic's stated policy.
Are there any players in the Brit top 100 who touch them with a bargepole or who regularly use the emplacements commander? |
Think this is due to the other HMGs generally having subs (MP40 etc) whereas the nerfed Lee Enfields on the Vickers squad still tip the balance in garrison vs garrison. |
Just tested this with an invulnerable squad of Volks...
Pinned after 22 seconds wandering up across open ground on a Vickers whilst invulnerable. After 26 seconds whilst actually taking fire and losing 2 models. Seemed to take an extra second to suppress too.

4 man vet 2 Sturms beat 4 man commando squad when I tested it 2 out of 3 times. The RNG probably depends on the bugged ambush bonus, hence if the 1 commando model with ambush dies the Sturms win.

Commandos are 3 or 4CP, hence vet 2 is a realistic test.
Test was merely in the open at short range so no user involvement at all.
I do wonder what other 'mental' gymnastics need to be used for a starting unit to be almost as strong, and to scale better, than the UKF's elite doctrinal infantry.
Another test, both vet 0 in the open at medium range. Sturms beat 5 man commando squad losing 1 model! So much better at medium range and better with some vet at close range.
Another test, vet 0 sturms in light cover, 5 man commandos close, and lose. Sturms losing 2 models.
