You're totally right that fighting games are definitely the model to look at - waiting for some big huge company like THQ to swoop in and bribe people to make CoH an e-sport is just wishful thinking. Without spectator mode we're pretty much limited to replays, and I'm not sure how far the fighting game community would've gotten if everyone had had to sit around watching replays of games, but hopefully if CoH 2 is a great game then we can make something awesome happen. Actually that's unfair they have released some kinect games. Three of the leads from CoH are at Smoking Gun, so I think they know what they're doing. It's hard not to notice that the original CoH was great and OF/ToV (made after the Smoking Gun people left, I believe) were shit. And they've released 9 titles, so that's hardly "nothing." Thread: THQ is Bankrupt for Real This Time5 Jan 2013, 17:37 PM I don't mind hearing about negativity. I have a strong constitution and am able to take bad news along with good news. I think pretending like bad things aren't happening is denial and that living in a magical fairy land where everything is going to be okay is silly. I'm worried for Relic - they make great games (usually) but aside from their Warhammer games it seems like they don't sell very much. And I don't mean "RTS games aren't super popular," I mean CoH was the highest reviewed RTS game ever or something and yet it wasn't a blockbuster hit. I'm scared that the WH40k license is going to be worth more than Relic and that someone will snap that up and leave Relic twisting in the wind. Hopefully bidders don't decie that Relic's ability to make quality games left with the Smoking Gun Interactive people, and hopefully someone buys Relic, but I have no idea how this stuff works and it's hard not to be worried. Thread: attn Company of Heroes 2 Worldbuilders5 Jan 2013, 17:33 PM Well, Steam can auto download anything it wants for a game - it's called a "patch," so I don't see why they couldn't just add custom maps the same way they always did for the first CoH. I mean, Relic has to check the maps first to make sure they're good, so the "auto" here is just that they get added to automatch without people having to do anything, but obviously that's the only way a map can get into automatch because it's not like us players would have the ability to add them manually. I don't think anyone's expecting them to release a 'noob friendly' edition. By "better mapmaking support" I don't mean a nice little noob friendly editor or anything, I mean a better way for people to find and play custom maps. RTS games seem to have gone backwards since Starcraft/Warcraft III when it comes to making custom maps easy for players to share and play. And in my wildest dreams Relic would add the best CoH 2 fan maps to automatch more often than they did in CoH. In: Mapping Discussion

Thread: First look: Company of Heroes 2 in-game UI4 Jan 2013, 20:44 PM I love the whole "show all the units in the upper right" thing. CoH (and CoH 2) is a game where you don't have a lot of units so there's really no downside in sticking them all up there so you can quickly monitor them. I don't like how they got rid of the unit kill count broken down by type, though - it's helpful to be able to tell whether the M8 or the Rifleman squad killed the enemy motorcycle, for instance, and when you just have a number for your kill counter, you can't find that out. Thread: THQ is Bankrupt for Real This Time4 Jan 2013, 17:36 PM I don't know if this is good or bad or what but the trustee overseeing the THQ bankruptcy has also filed suit against THQ. It sounds like maybe people think that THQ is trying to dump its assets at a low price to the stalking horse bidder by making sure other people don't get a chance to bid, and since the stalking horse has agreed to keep the THQ management in place, this lets them keep running the company while shareholders are left holding the bill for the bankruptcy. Whereas if others could bid there's a change they would snap up THQ's assets, fire the THQ executives, and in doing so give some money back to the shareholders (because they would bid up the price a bit). In fact it sounds like the investors want THQ to just be broken up and its assets sold off. A bit more info at this Gamasutra article. In: Lobby
Thread: What is this site actually?4 Jan 2013, 08:44 AM Steam has a "community" for every game on Steam. There's no moderation or anything, just a bunch of people giving "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" to all the comments, and the navigation is pretty terrible. Until it changes quite a bit I don't see it becoming an actual community. COH2.org does have a Steam group though. In: Site Feedback
