So the gist of the OP is that people would win more with allies if they utilized their faction strength more based on some nebulous notions of countering OKW forward truck placing.
Let's say for the sake of argument that this is true. So Allies need to do X differently to unlock some hidden potential of their factions in order to win.
My question is : why should this apply to Allies only? Why aren't Axis factions the ones who need to "think out of the box" and come up with intricate combined arms joint attack scenarios in order to merely get a chance of succeeding against overwhelming Allied power? |
play dow(1) recently? you are describing that game. I had that speciically in mind when I made that post. If they could get away with 2 separate popcaps, three is not a large stretch and I don't think it would complicate things too much. |
Ideally the preference of combined arms as opposed to unit spam should be the way to enforce this. And no, a blob of Volks and Obers with a side of Panthers does not count as combined arms.
If you have one Tiger, what is preferable : get another Tiger or get other units of equal worth to support the Tiger?
As long as the answer is another Tiger, you will have unit spam.
This is closely tied in with the population system. From a design perspective, CoH2's approach to popcap is using a system around 20 years old, dating back to the start of RTSs. If a system works, don't change it. But it could have been made differently.
You could have separate popcaps for infantry, support and vehicles. It would not break the game's WW2 theme (need to field combined arms because company doesn't have infinite tanks or infinite MGs) and would deal nicely to prevent all kinds of spam.
It would become trivial to balance all sorts of existing issues with this. Let's say a Panzer is 3 vehicle pop, a Tiger is 7, and you have a maximum of 10 vehicle pop. Make a Soviet sniper consume lots of support popcap etc.
Additionally, allow the players to go over popcap at will but impose HUGE penalties for every unit of popcap. Every population over cap for infantry : -50MP per minute. for support popcap : -25 ammo per minute. For armour: -10 fuel per minute.
Enjoy your new blob free CoH with combined arms. |
In this thread: "Wtf Relic? Sturmtiger OP!" before WFA release. |
Of course I know, but does that matters? Well when that combined Schreckblob instapwnbbqs your tanks, you will have the comfort that it at least took coordination of 2+ players to do it. |
CoH2 perfect before WFA? Rose tinted glasses detected. ISU was never balanced, it went from underperforming to meta-defining beastkiller in one patch. Double snipers + Guards were a nightmare for any Ostheer player, yes, including March 2014. Panther went from underpriced to overpriced, overbuffed to undernerfed. Blitzkrieg was nerfed to the ground then rebuffed against the explicit design intent (cf. tweet about rocket engines by Q Duffy). t34s were utter crap even for 80 fuel which was their cost at the time. Etc. etc.
It's like people talking about how CoH1 didn't have any blobs. Go play a game and you will see that Romulan Cloaking Device snipers and AWACS Wehr bikes and Panzer Elite zeal blobs are still very much alive and well.
All this doesn't excuse the balance clusterfuck that is WFA, but at this point it is pretty much enough to nerf the broken stuff and let the meta sort itself out. Well, in for a penny, in for a pound - now I wish Relic were to balance for team games first, and introduce even more factions, so at least OP shit can counter OP shit. |
well ingame currency could allow tou to get a boost in a game, call in a certain unit to save you from defeat etc Ingame currency could also detonate a nuclear bomb in most capital cities on Earth.
I base this on ABSOLUTELY nothing but by all means let us issue nuclear danger warnings in case it turns out to be true. |
I think the question is why are your tanks moving unsupported, killing an unsupported tank really isn't hard. That's precisely the point : it is hard. Just not with the faction you are advocating. |
Today I rounded a corner with Stuart on Lanzerath. Big mistake.
You know that feeling when you go around a corner with a Luchs and are at range 30-35 from 3 Allied squads and all you can say is "ohshi--" before your tank dies?
No, you don't, because what are the 3 squads gonna do, shake their fists at your tank angrily?
Axis tanks do not have to live with this. This enables them to be a mobile reconnaisance force, among other things, yet another luxury Allied tanks don't really have.

I dont see Steam gaining anything if coh2 goes free 2 play Steam has nothing to do with it, Relic can make the game free tomorrow if they wanted to.
The point of f2p is to lure in more people to play the free game, including ones who do not want to shell out 40e for the original, and maybe buy a commander or two or skins. Some might even say "huh, I wanna try Ardennes Assault" or something.
Therefore more Steam transactions overall, and more profit to both Relic and steam. |
