GG, not.

If it's someone who's going to kick my ass and whom I want to get advice from on my play, I'm usually quite friendly. And there are people I think just deserve respect. Otherwise totally depends on my mood and whether I can be arsed to stop shift-clicking and zooming in on my units to admire their wonderful hats.
It's surprising the number of good players who are basically jerks though and just mock your lack of skill rather than trying to help. In any competitive game, I guess it's to be expected. There are always people who enjoy feeling superior when they know how to do something their opponent doesn't, probably because they have an inferiority complex.
So really - WHATEVER. If someone actually asks me what they did wrong, I tell them, and I'm surprised more people don't ask.

Youve misunderstood the netiquette...
If you say GG when you are winning, and not about to concede, its basicaly like telling your opponent "Ive won, fuck off already".
Its completely the opposite of what youve understood.
Its a way for the loser to compliment the winner and to backout of the game as a gentleman, without simply pulling the plug or quitting the match.
GG basically amounts to saying: "I am about to concede, because I can see you outplayed me. I am conceeding but wanted to thank you for the match and for the experience, before I do so".
NEVER say GG before your opponent does, unless you are about to concede. If he does, return the gesture, and it is then time for the opponent to concede, if there is no other ingame chat/discussion to be had.
This is the gentleman way.
In tennis, its the same as walking up to the net and offering your hand for a shake.
In chess, its like turning over your own King.
So you understand, its completely against the purpose, for the winner to do so first.
Yup, obviously.
I always thought that I was being polite

I always say GG when I am wining, for me its a compliment to my opponent and thanx for the game @ the same time.
I don't really see how that is insulting to the loser. Either typing GG first @ the end is acceptable for me.
When the game is obviously finished, for example at 10vp or base is destoyed, that's fine, I do this myself. but when you just lost a battle and not the war in the middle of the game, it's annoying.

Permanently BannedThat is the only proper use.
I know its fashionable these days to generally not give a shit about the consensual and unilateral basis of language, that is intended to ensure that all participants understand what is being said. That "I am entitled to abuse language as I see fit, because my anus is wider", but dont come crying to me when nobody understands a goddam thing you are abusing language to mean, inspite of its actual meaning and colloquial use.
Saying GG as the winner, is the equivalent of yelling "FUCK YOU" across the field at a tennis match when you are 3 sets up. Do it, fine, if you are an asshole and dgaf, but you are, categorically, "doing it wrong" and are a moron for doing so.

I don't really agree.
Like a previous poster said, if the game is obviously finished, I tend to say GG just to tell the other player that I appreciated the game and the efforts that both players put into it.

Many of you forget two Things here:
1) A lot of players actually have no clue what GG stands for. They're just lemmings doing what everyone else is. Same as with LOL.
2) Quite a few players you match up against do not speak English. They may for that reason just type GG as sort of a 'hello' or 'goodbye'.
So there are actually reasons not to feel offended if the winning player throws a GG. Especially not if it's the only communication you had since GL HF.
I'm more concerned by the lack of communication tbh. I feel it has dropped a lot compared to COH1, and I partly blame the missing lobby for it.
The lobby was the cave of the pocket-nazis, I know, but it was also a place to get to know strangers a bit before you killed them on the battlefield.
I had a handfull good contacts build like that. I think it does add to a good gaming comunity.
I personally got into COH quite late and I've had way more nice interactions in this game. In VCoH it was just everyone either trashtalking over nothing whether or not they were winning, or people accusing you of being a smurf. Maybe it was different when you got a bit better but at low levels it was invariably pretty poisonous.
Yeah, on the preemptive GG, I don't mind Stephenn's way - that doesn't bother me. The early winning GG is pretty rude, as is people typing 'leave'. People leaving without gging is OK. People being ragey twats is kind of to be ignored. I quite like glhfing because people who are going to be twats later usually respond by complaining about the map, which is a good indication that you should get a troll unit to make them foam up.

Hate to break it to you all, but it's the INTERNET and a VIDEO GAME, in other words just remember it's only pixels on a screen!
I swear some of you must spend a majority of your time behind the computer.
I personally LOVE when someone rages at me in game especially when I'm winning, it means I'm obviously doing something right. I also couldn't give a rats ass if someone talks to me or not in game, just play the friggin game!
It's not about how much time some people spend behind a computer, it's about treating other people like human beings.
You might not care about other people, but there are people who have killed themselves over insults they received on the internet. Fez II was cancelled because people were giving him so much shit. Go ahead and say "they should get over it" but I don't think it's that hard to just treat people better.

Because COH2 has post-game chat I feel that players should surrender immediately if they "gg" and not remain in-game to chat. That way the other player can talk afterwards if he wants, or he can go straight back for another game.
Also, it doesn't cost you anything to be civil.

As I said, feel free to shit on the actual meaning and use of the expression.
Everyone these days seems to think langauge is their personal property to bend and twist as they wish anyways, instead of a shared and consensual medium of objective definitions, meant to facilitate unilateralcommunication and understanding, so youd hardly be unusual in doing so.
So lets change the use of the expression to fit your personal definition, instead of using it universally with its consensual definition. Cos you are so special.
Maybe if enough people, wrongly and selfishly, call an apple a tomato, we should all start doing the same.
Who cares that afterwards we cant distinguish between the two anymore in language as long as your obstinacy to conform to the shared existing meaning is adopted by everyone else, right?
I mean who gives a shit what an expression or term is meant to mean, right?
Lets just use them however the fuck we personally want.
Maybe some genius will decide to use GG instead of GlHf in the start of a match too, and we will just accept that too, because who gives a fuck, right?
Lets burn all dictionaries and randomly crosslink definitions so everyone gets a different definition for each term, each time. That wilo be realoy good, cos everyone can be special then, with their own spexial definitions of things,

If the game is obviously going to end with me winning (eg 6 VPs left and I have all the victory points) I'll say "gg" as a sort of "thanks for the game".
That is an excellent point. If you have your opponent tripple capped with 6 VP's left it is save to say "GG". If the "GG" is thrown prematurely, it only makes the comeback sweeter.

...
There is no debating what GG means, it means "good game" at the end of a match. Saying it when the game isn't over is incorrect and rude as fuck, but saying it when the game is 2 seconds away from a unavoidable VP finish isn't really that rude. I can see why some people wouldn't want to do it, and I usually don't do it myself, but when you try to bash someone for being "wrong" on a issue with no right or wrong answer just makes you look like a hypocritical retard.

I call GG when winning all the time. and guess what? I win. so suck it?
Maybe you really had luck with this in the past, but the day will come when you call GG too early and the enemy comes back. This game will be really embarrassing for you. Btw, there are some things like "manners". Don't GG if you are winning expect you really want to be arrogant.

Permanently BannedIf the losing opponent doesnt say it, he either doesnt know it even exists, or is raging fking hard and would rather type any number of expletives rsther than GG, in which case telling him GG, as the winner, particularly in a match where you utterly roflstomped him, is just rubbing salt it.
It wasnt a GG. It was a fking floorwipe, and he knows it. GG isnt gonna make him feel any better about that.
If he was a good opponent, consider saying "wp", which is "well played".
In all other situations, its best to just leave GG as it is, as the conceeding players courteous and gentleman way out.
If he doesnt say it, no reason for you to, either. Cos he never conceeded, nor did you.
This stuff has already been established and set out. No need to reinvent the wheel, especially on a term that is one of the few remaining relatigely courteous ones in an otherwise toxic MP environment.
Lets keep atleast one of them, with some meaning.

It's Esports etiquette for competitive players to GG after a loss. It sets a good example, which helps Esports grow as a whole.
