Why artillery pieces don't fire smoke shells?

What if, priests/ML20/LeFH18/25prd, could fire smoke shells? Would it be better for the game or bad?

Given how much of an investment they are, if you want them to pay for themselves you want them firing as often as possible.
Unless they were on a seperate cooldown to the normal barrage and fired more rapidly then standard shells, can't imagine it would see anything besides the most niche of use.

Because no one is his right mind will use 450mp 50fu doctrinal 8cp investment for smoke.

Not just for smoke, but ALSO a long range smoke.

400 mp but i think the 15 popcap is more of an issue if you take the time until the barrage recharges into account.
It could work to implement other barrage types like flares, smoke or white phosphorous for example if those had shorter cooldowns attached: for example at 90s standard cooldown for the 10 10,5cm HE shells from the LeFH which could also fire 2 or 3 smoke shells with a lower scatter with only a 25s cooldown so you wouldn't have to replace mortars in the lategame if you want to use smokescreens and do not waste the full potential of your Howitzer.
Those ideas however would probably be part of a major rework which may not be needed as Howitzers do work fine as it is and the new commanders seem to be the next big thing.

Not if it takes the same time to fire a barrage. A few huge shells or a much quicker fire/load/ready time would be needed to offset the usual slow, steady punch that a howie gives.

I think 3 or 4 smoke shells would get the job done. They'd presumably be larger than your average smoke shells.
Could put white phosphorus on the priest. I find the creeping barrage pretty useless unless I'm missing something

I would use it for a large assault with T-34s and Conscripts/Shocks Troops or Penals with Satchels, but I guess is only me. I thought that would be very OP aswell.

Why take away the best thing Mortars have left?
Besides killing things in buildings.
