I just want to point out from that Katitof quote, the Soviets were the ones attacking the city for a significant portion of the battle, once the axis had occupied it.

You can consider this as Active Defense. There is also Passive Defense, which is also known as static defense (trench warfare from WWI, Maginot line, Metaxas Line and Siegfried line).

shocks can be just as defensive though, especially on close quarters areas, it can be almost impossible for infantry to take points if there are shocks hiding behind shot blockers.

I guess that in your opinion assault grenadier fit Ostheer "Defensive Doctrine" and shock troops the Soviet "Defensive Tactics" for the same reason, although I respect your opinion I happen to have another.

Shock troops in real life and through out history are by definition offensive oriented units yet I am pretty sure that in occasion they found themselves defending positions and probably very effectively since they where elite troops.

The real issues with shock troops in "urban defense" are not the names. I have explained them in feedback thread.

But soviets had no shock infantry in ww2. They had shock armies (reenforced armies for breakthrough offensives).
Your "ingame shock units" are CQC-Specialists. Relic had named them for unknown reasons "shock troops" but they are nothing compared to historical "shock units" like german ww1 Stoßtruppen or other "shock units".

That is incorrect Soviet had troops that where task with typical role of shock troops, to create gap in the enemy frontline.

Actually their hole military theory depended in "shock" operation and that this reason they created "shock" armies.

You are correct in game shock troops are CQC Specialists. They are also offensively oriented.

Can't remember but does Ass Grens have smoke nades? (reworks gets confusing). 6 man with armor and smoke have a bigger defensive capabilities. Smoke a VP and force them to come to you if they want to dislodge you.

AGs have sprint, not smoke.

Let's not bash people when we disagree with them.

Either way, pulling history into an argument about thematic doctrines is a bad, bad idea, as evidenced here. If you'd like a more overt reason, it's because nobody ever agrees on history.
