How to avoid getting trapped by your own wire?

Is there any reliable way to ensure the squad stringing wire stays on the outside, not between wire and piece of cover? Does direction of the command to string the wire affect it? Or will its angle change the outcome?

issue move order in front of cover then build order. Some time one can simply vault the cover even when caught...

Cheers, didn't know this affected the positioning while stringing the wire.

I have escaped the wire trap by vaulting in past, but yesterday I was on Crossing in the Woods and my Pios got stuck next to the sandbags near the center-left crossing area. IDK why you can't vault those sandbags but a Rifle nade ate my squad as they were clumped so much.

Suggestion from Vipper is good.

Also if you are laying wire, and watching, try to leave a bit unfinished so that you can still cancel it before you leave if a unit cannot get out.

Unfortunately the AI is not smart enough to try to avoid building itself into a corner. RE's and wire actually are the ones I have the most trouble with as they love to trap themselves between traps.

Be mindful that when you issue a wire order, engineers have a habit of starting on the end that you finished the order on, not the start of where you marked the wiring. Don't know why that happens.
