I'm shopping for parts to do my first build, but right now I'm stuck on SSDs.

I'm looking for 750GB to 1TB SSD internal drive.

I'm trying to stick around 200$USD to 250$USD.

I found this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0D9-004J-00009

and this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820228144&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&PageSize=10&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo

I'm just not really sure how to tell what the differences really are in storage units.

dont know too much about the 1tb models but:

samsung has had some problems in the past with SSDs (trim error deleting data, etc)

better go for a crucial mx 200, i have the 500GB version myself, very good SSD

the big difference is mostly lifetime, then speed for larger files (depending on the technology used)

personally i wouldnt buy a TB ssd, 500 gigs + a 2tb hdd is much better value for the average gamer.

what have you planned for the rest of the build? anyone helping you?

this would be my suggestion:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2F83426468&cm_re=crucial_mx_200_500gb%2b-_-20-148-949-_-Product

its pretty much the standart suggestion in my pc forum

about your build:
case is not bad ( i got the phantek enthoo pro for myself, its just a bit more slick with the psu cover and the hdds to the back side)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811854003&cm_re=enthoo_pro-_-11-854-003-_-Product

fractal design r5 is pretty good aswell
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352048&cm_re=fractal_design_r5-_-11-352-048-_-Product

ram is fine, if you want you can get drr 3000 or 3200, but that doesnt matter much

mainboard is excellent, cpu is fine

now, why do you buy 6 fans? and cheap ones?
i would rather get 2 or three fans for two times the price. you dont need 6 fans at all, and especially if you want to use your pc longer, they will last and be worth it (cheap ones get loud really fast)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835352023&cm_re=fractal_venturi-_-35-352-023-_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA68V21E0606&cm_re=silent_wings_2_140mm-_-9SIA68V21E0606-_-Product

for the cpu cooler:
if you spend that much money on a pc, get a decent and quiet cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA68V21E0632&cm_re=dark_rock-_-9SIA68V21E0632-_-Product
that is a little over the top, the sweet spto would be a macho x2 or a brocken 2, they are quieter and better

wait a little bit for the tests on 1080 custom designs and get a good one

what psu are you getting?

PSU I don't know yet. I really don't know anything about them honestly other than wattage differences. I currently have an 800 Watt PSU, but its 7 years old so I don't know if i want to salvage it and use it in my new build.

I'm a fan of the Samsung EVOs. Never had a problem with them yet out of a large number bought for friends and family.

no. just NO
even if it was the premium model at that point, it is outdated now.

there is a big difference between PSUs, one might not be able to see them, but 1. you hear them (cheap ones are often loud) 2. you will smell it.
i had a bad psu fry my motherboard. it was okay, because it was a 40 bucks board, but you dont want that to happen in your 2000$ PC
the thing is that new and good PSUs regulate the current much better which decreases the chance of instabilities and protects you from overvoltage/current

therefore you need to spend a little
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA68V21E0644 (pretty good, have it myself now)
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA68V39G8981&cm_re=be_quiet_pro_power_11-_-9SIA68V39G8981-_-Product
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2F84479060&cm_re=Cooler_Master_VS-Series_550W-_-17-171-101-_-Product

and yes 500 to 550 watt is absolutely enough even with OC

honestly, for 1500$ you can get a pretty beastly rig already. i5 6600k, gtx 1070 (after it has dropped a little in price), 16 gigs ram, good psu.

for gaming laptops:
they suck. you can get a pc with the same power for half the price
but if you really want one: where are you planning to buy it? i have no clue which english sites are good for that, therefore point me in the direction and i will have a look

I'll just add that half the price is very optimistic estimate. In most cases its half of the performance of PC for twice the amount of money. This can seen in this very same scratchedpaintjob post. There are many laptops that cost significantly more than 1500$, but there is no laptop on the market that is even remotly close in performance to 6600k and gtx 1070 combo.

if you include buying a monitor and a keyboard for the normal rig, its about right.

its not a nogo but if you dont have a lot of cash, or arent depserately in need of being very mobile, i would always go for a normal rig.

the choice of the motherboard depends on the platform you want to choose and that depends on the pricepoint
for the new skylake generation, the asus z170 pro gaming is the standart recommendation for example. but honestly, if you want to buy a new pc, wait one month more, because atm it is the worst time to buy a new pc, as nivida has just launched (very high prices) and amd will launch in 2 weeks (low availability)

It's cool I would have to wait till December to buy PC anyway (discount and sale...) so usually how long does it take for new stuffs to cool down to affordable prices anyway?

Rig really depend (if you want the best price-quality ratio) on :
  • what games you want to play ;
  • graphics settings (high, ultra) you want in recent game ;
  • compromise you willing to do for future games ;
  • what you want to plug in your PC (second GPU (SLI/CrossFire), how many SATA3/M.2/USB(2, 3, 3.1)/RJ45/... port you need) ;
  • your monitor definition (if you don't want to change it just after) ;
  • if you want to overclock.

For example :
Nvidia GTX 1080 is over power for the majority of game with max graphics settings in 1080p.

For Nvidia GPU and Intel CPU never or nearly. :D

I guess it depends how costly are the peripherials somebody uses. I normally use keyboard ment for programming not gaming so its pretty dirt cheap, and a 40 euro mouse. I also use HD monitors and these are really cheap right now.

But if somebody would want to buy really expensive gaming mouse and mechanichal gaming keyboard plus the 4K monitor then all the peripherials could cost much more than the PC itself and then the half price estimate would be true. On the other hand, if you would like to have same gaming performance on laptop you would still need to buy all 3 of these on top of it... The mouse is a must if somebody wants to play games and laptop monitor + laptop keyboard combo is not comfortable even if most expensive of laptops.

that depends on how good the yield is. most of the time time its about 1 month. the good thing is that by the time you get your new pc, zen will likely be available, which menas lower prices or higher performance
