http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-07-10-sega-claiming-nearly-USD1m-from-company-of-heroes-2-preorders

20,000 units sold over a 5 month time period.
Based on the # of simultaneous users shown on Steam its fair to say this game sold less than 150,000 copies and probably more than 80,000.

So Sega/Relic has made less than $8 million on a game they worked on for more than 2 years.
And Sega/THQ of course must extract their "publisher fee" from that money.

i would like to point out the gaming trends of today. the top sales go to sc2, call of duty, battlefield, and other games that alot of gamers dislike to one degree or another.

honestly other than ourselves, rts nerds, ww2 fans, and some random people who will play it because it's new; there's not a market for coh2. not like there was when vcoh came out as something brand new with cover and strategic play.

so i dont hold much by sales

I see the problem in marketing and in the rush of bringing it out. This game is intended to jump on the train of competetive multiplayer. The competetive scene with tournaments twichstreams and other things is not yet full. We have seen, that there where shooter like cs and sc2 as the only real strategy game that had a big audience. Then came the reviving of Mobagames with League of Legends in the front. They achieve great success and even dota2 i bet is strugling to get to that lvl. With the rise of Lol and competetive gaming we saw other games taking part in it, like World of Tanks. I think 2 things were important. 1. The huge competetive scene of Asia got envolved. 2. These game had a free2play model. I think the competetive scene(yes coh1 has a small one too) needs another great strategy game that is easy to learn, hard to master and enjoyable to watch. COH2 had some strugles with THQ SEGA and stuff. They should not hurry on bringing out this stuff so early and better improve the gamefeatures. I see the problems in coh2 here:
1. For its visuals it is very ressourceintense. Strategygames dont need to have such high requirements. (Here the first wave of people was denied, because of too bad pcs)
2. There where great features with implemented Twitch and stuff, however there where no rankings. This is an absolute nogo if you want to see it as a sport and not as a arcady 5 minute trashthing
3. There was far to few marketing made at launch and post launch.
People outside of Coh1 dont know nothing about the game. And they dont know nothing about Relic as a dev. Furthermore the first championship...again was made with coh1 veterans....without stating that there even is an Tournament. I myself didnt know about it before, i stumbled on it here on this site by accident. (1000 is great money, however comparing to other tournaments there should be a bit more!) The whole tournament wasnt announced in the game, so only people who are really into it, searching through forums and stuff could know. Here we need to look at other esportsgames and how they arrange the tournaments, this is another world compared to coh2 first tournament.
I wanted the game for a long time, because i liked playing the singleplayer campaign in coh1 when i was smaller, but besides that i never had the feel that i need to buy this game. That as i see it is the MOST important thing in marketing, as we only buy things that we have the feeling we somehow need.
4. The whole DLC stuff. We need to keep in mind, this is no F2P game! We can sell some skins yes, but commanders is not the right thing. Better let us make commanders ourself. This will add more variety and better apply to different tactics. Here it is important to put commanderskills into tiers, so you cant make an op commander...but i am going to much into details.

In conclusion i want to say that i like this game a lot! I play it nearly every day and have about 70 hours made in it. But i feel very sad for it not succeeding as much as it would have the potential to. I think it is still not to late! But it will cost money and time to make it a great success. There are different things you could do to make the game more active. For example try to market it on the asiatic market. If you descide to stick with the commander system you can make commanders that are free if you for example subscribe to the coh2 youtube and stuff. I am not a marketing expert, so sry if this sounds a bit silly. But you will need to invest resources in this game to be a success and the best time for it is now. You propably wont make a success as LOL or SC2, but there is definatly place for a bigger community. OK i better stop writing now, as this is really far more than i wanted to write in the first place
