Tournament Statistics! (and no pretty graphs DEAL WITH IT)

Since people have been asking, I shall do them the honors.

Here is how the data is broken down, I will take a look at each round and look at its corresponding statistics. I ignored round 1 because, well, mirror matches don't really tell much. :P

As the rounds go up, more descriptive information would be given. What does more descriptive information entail? Commander choice, map choice (for rounds applicable), first 5 units, how close/far a victor it was, tech path, how long the game was, and etc. (I'm open to suggestions here, but be mindful, I have to sit though these games. :C)

LIMITATIONS OF THE DAMN STATISTICS
There are many limitations of the statistics I have presented. First off, the sample size becomes increasingly small as the rounds go up, in terms of games as well as players. This means that the statistics reflect those players that remain. Whether or not you can justify saying that a particular player exemplifies a faction is up to you. I have also assumed that commander choice influences your teching structure. This is not always true. I did this out of simplicity.

MG34 is OP as fuck. OKW tends to have a huge manpower surplus at times which can easily be put into an Pak43, skipping the need to invest anything into raketens. Smines are great against certain strats. And that's really all you need, bunkers and zeroing have no real reason to exist for OKW.

Ostheer just has an incredibly hard time against usf. Against soviets, they don't hold MUCH of an advantage against soviets either.

Things Ostheer does better:
Minesweeping (but on the other hand OKW has so much manpower and large squads that they don't even need to sweep...)
Non-fuel artillery (largely meaningless in 1vs1 outside of Semois, on which I'd say Ostheer is actually a superior choice to OKW)
Munition based artillery (useful against B4...and that's about it)
Vehicle snares (largely meaningless when you don't get the ubiquitous shrekblobs of OKW)
Long term vehicle production (no fuel penalty but huge tech costs compared to OKW)

Things OKW does better:
Everything else

Ostheer has a rather weak earlygame especially against USF. Their advantages over OKW are not particularly useful for 1vs1.

I think the statistics are quite in accordance with the current game balance as I see it.

OST underpowered for 1v1, Allies losing due to being played by the wrong hands.

Those graphs highlight a pretty small gap between the number of games won by Soviet / USF / OKW.

Man OST is performing badly... and is under-represented!

The win percentages are much cloer than the cries of "nerf OKW" would suggest. Also in round for when the "better" players are playing OKW looks to be massively outclassed by USF and Soviets.

So this does lend support to the fact that balance is really only an issue at the higher levels. So when these top players start claiming balance is askew then it is worth listening to otherwise the rest of us mere mortals just need to l2p.

I think one of the major reasons that Ostheer is underrepresented is the way the rules work. The Axis player always has to declare his faction first. If you declare Ostheer, the Allied player can then "counter-pick" with USF because Ostheer struggles against USF so often on so many maps. With the way factions are in the game though, there needs to be some precedent of one player declaring faction first.

As for Ostheer underperforming, it isn't a huge surprise. The early game strength of the faction has been slowly gutted over the course of CoH 2 with nerfs to the HMG42, LMGs, FHT, tech timing, PaK 40, Pgrens etc etc. The usual justification for this was that late game Tigers/Panthers are super strong. Sadly, Ost T4 isn't feasible in a close game. Ost T3 flounders against Soviet call-ins and USF in general leaving the only option for Ostheer as Tigers. Properly managed T34/85s deal with Tigers without much trouble as long as Mark Target is available. And the new Is-2 can pretty much go head to head with a Tiger and come out on top. PaK40s are still amazing but when a faction is crutching on one late game heavy tank and their AT gun... things aren't looking good.

LMG Grens are still strong but they don't have the ability to hold the line like late game Volks with their insane Vet bonuses (plus the ease at which they get there with schrecks) and 5 man squads. Nor do LMG grens have the raw killing power of Obers. The MG34 fills the same role as the HMG42 but OKW has a better arsenal with which to support it.

Not to mention the fact that the Luchs is the perfect vehicle to tide an OKW player over before getting a Panther whereas investing into a P4 could potentially mean never Ostheer never making it to a Tiger. Plus the P4 is probably easier to kill than a Luchs with the combination of small target size, crazy killing potential, in-combat stealth and raw speed.

TL:DR - Ostheer is plagued with an overly expensive teching system if you go past anything but T2. Plus their base-line tanks cannot compete with Soviet call-ins or USF Major tanks. Tigers are strong but they come late (often too late against USF). Grens are too fragile and you don't have the luxury of mass amounts of schrecks everywhere to supplement your other AT. Soviet would suffer from the same problems as Ostheer regarding tech costs except they get phenomenal doctrinal choices like Shocks, 120mm mortars, Mark Target, T34/85s and 30 munition mines - oh and demo charges.
