Playing 3 games:

Campaign 20.3
Comp Stomp 18
Automatch 11
TOW Challenge 5.6
TOW Scenario 5.2

Playing 25 games:

Comp Stomp 5.5
Automatch 4.2
Campaign 3.1
TOW Challenge 0.8
TOW Battle 0.8
TOW Scenario 0.5

Play 100 games:

Automatch 2
Comp Stomp 1.7
Games v 2 AI 0.7
Games v 3 AI 0.6
Games v 4 AI 0.6

Note from that that at the 3 game level, Campaign is the most popular game mode and twice as popular as automatch

By 25 games the campaign is least popular, but comp stomp is still more popular than automatch

It is not until 100 games that automatch becomes most popular, but still not much more than comp stomp, campaign drops off at that point

It is also consistent that TOW remains basically uninteresting

Yeah, if you look at your own achivements there is the option to see the global figures

You cannot get much data on play preference from this, as there are only two strictly faction related achivements:

Play 500 times as Germans .7
Play 500 times as Soviets .6

So there is not that much difference, though a slight preference for Ostheer of around 15% or so

I feel this makes sense though. Some players will jump right into the campaign to get a feel of the game. After that, they move onto compstomp to understand the game mechanics even more. I think we can infer that the players with a 100 matches are already invested into the game, at which they will be playing against real opponents.

vCoH had live stats reported on the multiplayer welcome panel. The campaign and comp-stops always accounted for the large majority of player activity so it's no surprise that the same is true for CoH2.

As a side note, does anyone know how Steam sorts its titles in the top sellers section when sorting by relevance? Is it really ordered by top selling units? The reason I'm asking is that CoH2:AA was in the top 20 last night which is surprising given the entry price and all the discussions here.

More or less yes.

Most people will start with the campaign, and the existing campaign does not have much replay value.

I've been wanting to pull those stats for some time, I've done it now because the forum is populated by people wondering why Relic is doing a new campaign

It is the 1v1 v 4v4 debate on a wider scale, 1v1 is less popular than 4v4 auto-match, but even people who play auto-match are nothing like the only people who play the game

I'm not remotely surprised that people here don't welcome AA.

It's not for them, and they view this, probably correctly, as a zero sum game that means they will get what they do want (balance and bug fixes) later or not at all

Well I have always been a big fan of a good singleplayer game. I am happy Relic is making one because that will add much to the game (except that it is DLC :().

Weird, considering people enjoy the campaign. The ToW challenges are really cool, all of them. The co-op scenarios are great fun with a buddy. I've cleared all of them, most on general, some are really difficult, Kharkov seemingly impossible as it stands now, but always fun.

I link to it whenever people argue that single player content doesn't matter, or when people say something like "If I only we knew how popular comp stomp is"

There aren't any recent public figures of total installs are there?

As of 9 months ago, it didn't make the Ars steam gauge Top100, so we could assume less than a million, although a lot has changed since then so that assumption probably doesn't hold now.

Games v 4 AI 0.6
Games v 1AI 0.5
TOW Battle 0.4
TOW Scenario 0.4
TOW Challenge 0.4
Campaign 0.4

Just to have another source for our approximation, just look at the number of match in the watch live game section:

Snapshot's date : 2015-02-07

1vs1 = 3 pages; 19 per page= 57 games;
2vs2 = 6,5 pages; 19 per page= 124 games;
3vs3 = 4,5 pages; 19 per page= 86 games;
4vs4 = 5 pages; 19 per page= 95 games;
Aut VS CPU = 5,5 pages; 19 per page= 105 games;
Custom = 20 pages; 19 per page= 380 games;

Ration of players playing an automatch team game vs a 1vs1 = (124+86+95)=305/57 = 5,35/1
Total number of player at that time : 7140

So any discussion saying that only 1vs1 matter, is irrelevant.

Every types of match matter, every players is important.
