That is the point: Although it has not been released yet, Rome 2 will be the best TW just because it is ROME.

The polish of Shogun with the scope of Empire and the setting of Rome....if they can accomplish that, you might never see me again.

Idk guys, Shogun, Rome, Medieval (maybe even Medieval II) were great. But i feel like the sequel has gone downhill since then, Empire TW was okay, Napoleon was horrible and Shogun 2 as well. (I think I'm forgetting some of them here...) I'm not buying Rome 2 for sure, I haven't checked prices but I bet it will cost around 60€, which tbh, is a fucking holdup.

All I know is it's the sequel that I've been waiting for since 2004. I'll happily give them my 60€ :p (Medieval 2 was great too btw)

I have already watched some footage of Rome 2´s gameplay, it looks awesome and is tremendously better than Shogun 2 (although it is pre-alpha,LOL). The campaign map´s size isn´t as great as in Empire,it only includes suitable territory for a game featuring the ancient world.

I don´t doubt that Rome 2 is going to be the most outstanding round-based strategy game that ever existed.

It's looking really good so far, but upon hearing muh archae seleucia wouldn't receive the polish of a playable faction, I had to reinstall Rome 1.

I don't see the hate on Shogun 2. It was the best vanilla game since Rome imo. Empire was really unpolished, but mmmm those naval battles. Conversely I don't understand all the praise Napoleon gets, and Medeival 2 without mods is fairly meh.

While it was still a great game, my problems with shogun 2 was the extreme lack of unit diversity, the pointlessness of most naval battles, and I was not a big fan of the setting or art style.

I loved Medieval 2, Empire was real good but not great, Rome was the best, I felt like Napoleon was a dumbed down Empire. Was not a fan of Napoleon.

empire and napoléon both had a lot of troubles, but their greatness has been realized through dedicated modding. especially on the part of napoléon: tw, and i think all tw lovers owe to themselves the joy in playing, for example, n:tw with darthmod installed.

that's a fucking game, right there!

and for any tolkein fans, third age: total war (for medieval 2) is magnificent stuff. magnificent! there are troll units that crush humans underfoot, there are masses of goblin infantry, dwarves, aye, and even the ringwraiths are there to give you reason never to send a scouting unit near mordor - unless you're an ally! and the pope mechanic of medieval 2 is employed in this mod as sauron, which adds great flavor to your campaigns. in my first campaign, isengard lost favor with sauron, and sauron had mordor and rhun both attack isengard, giving gondor the window of opportunity in which to reinstall rohan as a functioning nation.

well, give it a try, anyway.

Are you guys kidding? Shogun 2 is the best TW to date in terms of graphics and polish, building on the past TWs. It had both the gun era and old sword era how is that for unit diversity? Rome is a classic but outdated. It's up to Rome 2 to take shogun 2's crown which seems to be the case so far ;)

I payed 500 sek to play a game with 1 unit roster. Oh and after that they added a new unit roster by DLC with the Ikku Ikki, and then they added the rest through expansion and another piece of DLC (rise of the samurai).

Rome have 7 rosters with different units (Chartaginian, Barbarian, Roman, Greek, "Eastern", Selecuid/Macedonian and Egyptian) and old fans will probably call that generalising the factions a lot, since every faction got largely different units (except for the 4 roman factions, they got 2 different rosters though). All the barbarian factions got 2-3 units different from each other, the Selecuids are very seperated from Macedonian etc.

Shogun was a good game and I enjoyed it. It was way too streamlined though (couldn't move freely through territories made the map feel like a series of narrow corridors) and after one playthrough I got bored with it. In Rome I felt I could (and still can!) play it 100 different ways depending on how I want to deal with Rome, were I want to expand, what I want to focus on etc. Shogun didn't have that and felt more like a expansion than a full game. (See: Total war: Alexander/Medieval 2: Kingdoms)

No I didn't, doesn't change the fact that Rome is 8 years old -> outdated. It's still a great game however I think it's a close second to Shogun 2.

I agree with you that Shogun 2 was the most polished game at release, but seriously...there's so much life in Rome, even 8 years old. Hell even the vanilla game is still pretty good, and with mods like Europa Barbarorum or Roma Surrectum it's beating out newer TW games imo.

Medieval 2 was actually my first TW game, and I backtracked to Rome 1 and imo it was the far better game, despite the outdated graphics.

But it does change the fact that you cannot judge whether Shogun 2 is better than Rome 1 was in its year of release. You have to compare both games whilst considering the time they were released in, thus it has no sense to say Shogun 2 is better than Rome 1 only due to Rome´s age.

By the way I think that Rome/Medieval will always be better than Shogun. Do you either want to fight in Japan only playing factions who are difficultly distinguishable from each other or gain access to factions of tremendous variations fighting in Europe, Middle East and North Africa??? I´d choose the second alternative.
