So what in the game changed where smoke/smoking wrecks now stop all forms of combat?
It never used to be like this. Smoke used to block vision in a specific direction, but if a target was immersed in combat, the game used a bit of common sense and you could still fire on the target
Now when smoke is used, tanks and infantry stand around and stare at each other and refuse to fire, even if they were just doing so.
This change came with WFA, and every time Smoke of World Peace is evoked I'm left wondering why.

Just had a game where we surrounded a tiger ace with 2 IS-2's and 2 easy eights. He literally could not move.
He popped hisforcefield smoke and we sat there, bumper to bumper, until it cleared

There are moments when smoke from debris blocks LoS and two tanks in front of each other cant see each other.
Attack ground makes the moment slightly less awkward.
But even if you can see the enemy, units still refuse to shoot as normal.
USF also is the most capable faction of using smoke very annoyingly.

It reflects the game's emphasis on balance over realism - it makes no sense, but it keeps smoke useful, etc. I mean, is it really that much sillier than homing AT grenades and P-fausts?

You can't attack ground out of the smoke though.

You can attack ground out of most smoke, or? I only know a few ones which block attack ground (White phosphorus, Blendkörper 2H, FlaK HT smoke, ...). Could be that they also changed the old smoke (Mortars, Panzer Tactician, ..). Never tested that

OKW vet smoke nades seem to do the same.
