Internet Dying When Livestreaming

Made a similar post to the AT&T community forums a minute ago but I figured I'd post this here to see if anyone with some expertise could help out.

Basically I have not been able to stream recently because about 20 minutes into streaming coh2, my internet decides to (effectively) die. It will disconnect my stream, I'll lose connection to Relic servers, and when running a speedtest (sometimes it won't go through at all) I've had speeds as low as 0.10 mbs down - even with the stream off. At this point my connection becomes extremely spotty, sometimes even unable to reach google or other major websites. This lasts until I go and manually reset my router - at which point the connection stabilizes unless I try to stream again.

I can post my hardware specs in here if necessary, but I do not believe that this is at all a hardware issue. My PC performance is more than fine when streaming (not fps lag, no stutters, etc). This started happening about a week ago, with no known changes in my internet plan. I'm supposed to get 16 down/2 up, and I've always been able to stream with a bitrate of 1300 kb/s until now. I downscale to 852 x 480 which I believe is fine for my upload? (At least it has been in the past).

Anyways, if you guys need any more information I'll happily provide it. My assumption is that AT&T decided to start throttling me or something? But I never had that issue in the past.

CieZ,

It could be one of three things.

- They are throttling you.
- Your home router is dying.
- Your ISP router is dying.

I've used and abused my home routers and I am going through one a year. Consider doing this next time you are stream...

Disconnect your home router and connect your computer directly to the ISP router. If the problem does not appear your home router is most likely due for a replacement.

Let me know if the problem re-appears.

I've the same problem, it worked fine until yesterday's patch ... I just drop out of games when my stream is on, but it looks not like i'm loosing connection to relic, I'm able to start and find the next game immediately ... not a big problem for me since nobody watches anyway :D but it would be cool to get a solution

Yea, either Yours ISP is "Slowing" you down because you are using too much bandwidth or is a Router/Modem problem.
You should contact your ISP

Thanks for the response napalm and neffarion, I might need to contact my isp and see if they can run tests on the router. They actually gave me a router/modem combination so I can't just plug into the modem, it's the same device.

Twitch uses port 80, 443, and 1935. If they were to throttle a port I suspect it would be 1935. Given the symptoms that CieZ is describing and how random it all is...my bets are on his home router dying.

I have AT&T and I'm down the road from you and get no slowdowns. I'd bet its either their or your router.

I can stream 720p @900kbps bitrate with a 1.5 down connection (there is like 5-10% frame drop). I doubt the 2mbps down speed has anything to do with it.

I believe that the make/model of the router/modem combo that they gave me when installing everything is 2Wire - 3801HGV FLX

There's also another thing on the device that says

Model: RG3801HGV-000

which I guess is a bit more specific than 3801HGV.

Also just to rule out this sort of thing - AVG has not been able to find any malware/viruses (I tend to keep my system extremely clean anyways - I avoid torrents/random downloads/porn - very rarely have anything like that and performance is perfectly fine outside of streaming anyways.)

Would there be any way, on my end, to run a program while I'm streaming to see if anything happens with the internet connection? Or would AT&T be the only ones with access to something like that?

Was able to stream civ5 for ~45 minutes before internet decided to die. Copy of the stream log in case anyone is able to make sense of it:

Tonight or tomorrow I'll try streaming with ShaperProbe running to see if AT&T is throttling me.

You can try to download the 1GB bin http://speedtest.tweak.nl or https://www.linode.com/speedtest (multiple times if necessary, then just delete)
See if you get your connection messed up once you download it

CieZ,

From what you are describing it sounds like your 2WIRE RG3801HGV needs replacement. I'd call AT&T ad let them know that your internet is dying randomly and only starts back up again when you power cycle the router. AT&T should be able to run some line quality tests from their side but it'll most likely come down to a router replacement.

Just wanted to thank everyone for helping me out.

I spoke with AT&T today, the guy I was talking to said that his tests showed that there is some issue with the line - on their end. A tech is coming Monday afternoon to fix it, so I should be good to go to stream again Monday evening!

And I confirmed that they do not throttle at all (at least that's what I was told) so I'll start streaming more frequently (in the evenings EST) as well as continuing my YouTube videos Monday or Tuesday for people that watch them :)

they ofc will never admit to throttling. ;)
