Both the lefh and ML-20 are barrage only. Shouldve just asked in the shoutbox.

Only the Soviet B4 from the Counter Attack Commander can fire directly, and only at Tanks, and it costs a lot (I think 180? munitions).

Technically it can do that with counter barrage vet 1 ability. It auto fires at other artillery/barrage units(Mortars,katyushas) that appear in FOW or LOS, within in its arc of fire,when the ability is activated.

Thought by direct fire he meant directly fire at something without orders.

then i have a new question with the counter barrage activated, do i have to manually move the howitzer or will it move the the enemy unit on its own and fire?

It's probably better to just fire it manually, though. Counter-barrage is buggy in my experience, and it won't always fire back. Sometimes I set a mortar or something on counter-barrage, and it just sits there doing absolutely nothing until I take it off. Even if it's being shot by another mortar. I don't know if it's broken on howitzers too.
