The is no side armour so lateral damage wouldn't be possible. I do think extra damage on rear armour if possible would be a good thing for CoH3 though

As far as I'm aware, it's not even possible to do something like this regardless because tanks in coh2 are just two boxes, a front box for frontal armor and a rear box for rear armor. If a shot hits the front box the frontal armor is what is used, while if it hits the rear the rear is what armor is used.

While this is true, it is funny, that there is the game was intended to have side armor. In the game there are even training videos, where a panther is shown with a side armor hitbox

Cant recall where i have seen it with the panther, but if you watch the tutorial video about cover, there is an image, where the rear of a t34 is indicated with a red arrow, while the side are indicated with a yellow one.

Just simple as that, you have 2 choices while retreating. Having 100% armor and 50% speed, or having 50% armor and 100% speed. Alot more dynamic.

but except rear armor is 50% of the tank, so it's not really just the behind.

you could decrease reverse speed but also need to change the ratio of armor hit box. say 80% of tank is front armor and 20% is rear
