They have 0.97 RA (same as regular riflemen) compared to 0.87 RA for Sturmpios
DPS wise: 0/10/20/30 range (rounded up to 2 decimal places)
SturmPio STG44: 15.89/10.84/4.87/1.22
M3 Grease Gun: 13.25/13.25/1.22/0.21
Para Thompson: 18.66/18.66/6.19/0.88
Quick ugly math with overall squad dps at same ranges.
Sturmpios: 63.56/43.36/19.48/4.88
Cav Rifles: 77.07/77.07/16.04/2.39
Multiplied by opposing RA (VERY UGLY MATH: ONLY RELIABLE AS APPROXIMATION AND NOT ACCURATE DPS CALC)
Sturmpios: 61.65/42.06/18.90/4.73
Cav Rifles: 67.05/67.05/13.95/2.08
Note these are all static DPS numbers. On the move you are looking at about half for both.
Sturmpios have better moving accuracy than the Thompsons (though same as the Grease guns, who have better burst duration) and better RA and overall long/mid range DPS, which could explain what happened. Otherwise if the two units were already close Cav rifles would probably win most of the time.

Cavalry riflemen are a very good close quarters squad, but their dps beyond about 10 range is poor. Meanwhile Sturmpioneers have less damage below range 10 but can deal a lot more damage at farther ranges.
What you want to do is hold your ground so that the Cavalry riflemen take damage as they close in and that’ll compensate for Sturmpioneer’s lower near dps

No, he was the one with Cavalry riflemen, not the Sturmpios. If he wants to use those, he should probably play Ardennes Assault because that's where he'll have the most fun with them.

Only Thompson Paras are a match for Panzergrens. Strums are basically the samething as Panzergrens but are a little bit weaker and yeah they'll demolish everything you have early on. Cavalry Riflmen Riflmen don't work as a CQB unit because they are way too squishy/weak. They work okay in a halftrack or WC51.

Reminder that cavalry Riflemen have a sticky satchel. They can't be shock troops if they have a powerful snare...
Also have covering fire ability which is great at delaying a long range squad from bullying them until help arrives
