Servers for COH1 to continue on Steamworks
Posts: 150
I totally understand why you guys are happy, but I think they are shooting themselves in the feet.
Basically, when you have a game sequel, you can separate the game 1 hardcore fans in 3 parts :
- those who will love game 2
- those who won't like game 2 but will play it, trying to persuade themselves that game 2 is better
- those who will hate it and stay on game 1.
But if you improve the game 1 with game 2 features, I fear that some people who would have moved to game 2, will stay on game 1.
Call me devil's advocate if you want, but I rarely saw a sequel with very high expectations doing better than the previous game. The only solution to "force" hardcore fans to move to game 2 is to stop support on game 1.

It's not a very good advertising to have game 1 servers closed one month before game 2 is released.
Because if it was only because Relic are the kindest developpers in the world, we would have seen DOW1/2 support too.
Well, maybe we will have, but I honestly doubt it will ever happen.

COH1 support, great, but with COH2 soon to be here ? not sure it's great.

That's a crappy solution! Making game 1 bad force someone into game 2?! If game 2 isn't good enough to convince someone to move, then its the fault of game 2, not game 1...
In another scenario, game 2 is just different than game 1, so hardcore fans of game 1 won't move, but new hardcore fans will appear in the life of game 2....
There was no COH commmunity before COH1, and still we came together.

not said anything about making game 1 bad. I said stop supporting game 1, that's totally different.

never said the opposite.

Sure, but what Relic and Sega want, is that COH1 community move to COH2, and new members come in COH2. They need money to eat. The more the better.

yup, but COH1 community think that COH1 is a game close to perfection. I rarely saw a community think that for a game and think the same for the sequel. Look @ SC2, D3, DOW2, SupCo2 etc.
I honestly think it will be the same for COH2. I hope I'll be wrong though, rarely doesn't mean never.
But I don't talk about me, I talk about you, COH1 hardcore fans. I loved COH2 Alpha, but never was a COH1 hardcore. But I already read some COH1 hardcore fans comments about COH2 saying it was/is/will be bad. (leveling system, ressource system, UI etc etc).

I don't think its that different. Its still a way to articifially giving game 2 an edge, by limiting the potential of game 1.
On another note. Longterm support is certainly a quality of its own, which will increase the followership of a company and thereby increase the fanbase... If you want to exclusively talk about hardcore fans of COH1. Almost all of them will buy COH2 anyway, even if they turn back to COH1 should they like it more in the end.

Dont agree to that resoning. If they would shut CoH1 down, may ppl would refuse to play CoH2.

Keeping COH1 playable online before COH2 launch is a no brainer for Relic and Sega. That's not what I was talking about.
I was talking about improving COH1 with COH2 features, as Ami said after his chat with Quinn.

In the top menu click "Games" then "Activate a product on Steam..." and enter your vCoH serial key.

Your ToV key will be sufficient, though, so stop whining.

Something I lost? not really since i can still use it, but some for the fkin wierdest reason ever they decide to switch servers in order to screw me over, kewl
Those keys might not work yet, because the switch to steam hasn't been made yet. That ToV key is probably activated already atm. Ofcourse they won't make you pay again, that would be stupid of them.
Maybe that's what's up, but I thought i read someone saying that they had already done it

I think I know what u mean sir. I had the same problem. Just got some error when I tried to start TOV. (I have my Steam in Swedish so sry if I dont say this correctly) But in steam right click the game. Then go properties. Then go to Locale Files. Then Verify Integrity at game cache. That should make the game start for u again.
Edit: Maybe Im way wrong here and that wasnt even close to what u where asking
