The Soviets actually had more than 5 million troops, 20,000 tanks, 20,000 airplanes, and thousands of more field guns and artillery than the Germans had. They also recruited 6 million more troops by the time Operation Barbarossa end. The 2 million troops are only the troops that were on the front line during the attack there were millions of others in military bases scattered all around the Soviet Union. So no, the Soviets were not outnumbered, they outnumber the Germans on everything except submarines

Historican Meltjuchow names the following numbers for the Russian troops on the 21.06.1941

Soliders 3.289.851

Tanks 15.687

Planes 10.743

Artillery 59.787

for the Axis he names the following numbers:

Soldiers 3.690.000

Tanks 3.648

Planes 2.937

Artillery 12.686

One Major Effect in the early outcome of Barbrossa was that Stalin has shoot most of his Officers to dead in the early 30´s.

So the russian high command had less experinced officers most of them were dead. The German high command had veterans from WW1 and they gathered experince in Poland, France, Holland, Belgium,
Denmark, Norway and the Balkans.

Also the russians had suffered heavy losses in the winter war 39-40 with Finnland.

The Balkan operantion delayed Barbarossa at least 6 weeks wich were essential for the german
plan.

Another outcome wich was important for Victory at Moscow was the Japanese War with the USA.

In late 1941 Stalins spy in Tokyo told him that the Japannese wich were Allied with Germany (Stahlpakt)had no aim to attack Russia from the east, their interest lay in the oil reserves in China and Indochina. Japan suffered heavy from the american oil Embargo wich gave them to decide to attack the USA instead of supporting Germany against Russia.

This outcome made is possible that Stalin could Transfer 2.000.000 Soldiers from the Manchuria border to defend Moscow....if that wouldn´t be possible ....Moscow would fallen easy in German Hands.

Also noticable is that Stalin send 2 Officers in late October to sue peace with Germany but the
outcome of this proceedings were Hitler wanted a total surrender. Stalin was even willing to give most of the occupied regions to Germany but this wasn´t what Hitler wanted.

A couple of weeks later his troops were on their march back .....he should have take what he had been offered....a Gambler....gained nothing.

Well I'm glad we are all historians, I got my numbers from Glantz's Operation Barbarossa book. I'm not trying to be a smartass I just think the number 2 million soldiers is too low of an estimate to make for the Soviet Union.

I'm also anxious to see what I can learn from Theatre of History.

I don't think Stalin really meant that (come on, you know what kind of man he is), maybe just a temporary tactic to delay the German advance so that Soviet troops have more time to prepare the defense and wait for reinforcement from the Far East.
