Welcome to the game. By all stretches, this is actually a pretty great community. Compared to some gaming communities I've been apart of at least.
Take the advice that's been said already here. Add some of these people on steam and do some team games with them. That way, you avoid the possibility of always getting matched with experienced players in 1v1s until you've learned the game. Honestly, arranged team games are always more fun than random team games because you sort of know the people you're playing with. Good luck!
. Maybe you'd get a better idea of what you wanted then. Once you know what abilities you like using you can look for commanders that have useful combinations of those abilities.
