Back in June, Chinese company Tencent Holdings purchased a minority stake in Epic Games, but it turns out that stake is substantial. Tencent snatched up 48.4% of Epic Games shares last year – that comes to around $330 million invested – and even has the right to nominate individuals to Epic Games' board of directors.

"Since the Group has the right to nominate directors to the board of Epic Games, Epic Games is accounted for as an associate of the Group." Epic Games was the second US gaming investment from the Chinese outfit following its acquisition of Riot Games in 2011.

Relic began to look for a new headquarters in 2016 that could allow the 20-year old company to grow their employees from 180 to up to 350.

"Selecting the future home of the studio was a complicated process,” said Relic general manager Justin Dowdeswell. “We worked hard to find the right space, the right neighbourhood, the right partner, and the right location for staff – down to charting every employee’s journey to the office."

"That support from the government means a great deal," Dowdeswell says. "Even though we're owned by Sega, we need to provide a business case for everything we do, and a pitch to support the rationale. It has to make sense, and that assistance helps [Vancouver] to make sense by reducing the cost of operating here."
