Now that this game allready has the love of all russians, why not add a 1946 scenario: WW3, Allies versus Soviets.
No just kidding. I realise Relic would never even dare speak those words. Political correctness aka political corruption also eats into the gaming industry, unfortunately.
For the record, Paradox Interactive made such a version for their Hearts of Iron series, but ofc. that Company was swedish and could not be hit by the ban stick of some congressional committee.
As for the Pacific, I see the idea, but I can't see COH fit into it. Simply because the Pacific campaign was so much about navy and airforce and those arms do not really fit the concept of COH.
No, a desert campaign would be brilliant: UK and US versus Germany and Italy. I think desert maps would be very playable because they would allow for great mobility. Tanks would mean a lot under such circumstances, but it can be off set by gamemechanisms like Price (or my dreaded suggestion about introducing mechanical break-downs). |
I watched one of the SNF videos and heard the appraisal of the penal battalions. Apparantly they have better defense and can stomach a fight better.
This could just be me ofc, but I have tried it out now and I can't seem to notice any particular advantage of this unit.
Sure you can add a flamethrower and throw satchels. Those special abilities have their special uses. In one match for example, I put the flamer upgraded penal in an M3 and chased MGs and mortars behind the line.
But in standard shoot-outs w/o flames I can't say that I notice any difference. They seem to die just as easily against grens and get suppressed just as easily. I'd even say they seem to take much more casualties from grenades than conscripts (at one occasion 5 men i one go. That never happened to any of my conscripts).
In all, I find that the cost of the penal - regardless of their reinforcement cost which can be negated - is too high unless there's a special task that requires satchel or flaming. It's also inconvenient to have to go T2 for them.
But is there any special trick as how to use them as regular combat troops? Or are they just call-ins for special tasks only? |
Mortar spam is quite common on the forrested maps. Like Minsk. Any kind of mortar, that is.
The 120mm is rather unprecise. So all though it has good splash damage, I'm not sure it's worth spamming. |
even a stolen Elefant.
Just out of curiosity: Did anyone manage to steal an elephant in multiplayer?
I would sure like to see such a replay! |
An airstrike is 'only' 240 ammo...
For that price I don't expect the crew of a targeted, fixed gun to just get up again and dust their uniforms off when the plane has passed. |
240 munitions is really heave price for an air strike. Even for the soviets.
(Edit: it's actually 200, but anyhow)
It needs to be made more usefull or have the cost reduced.
Anyway, I agree wtih the OP that this doctrine is too one sided. I would suggest swapping in the 120 mm mortar. I think it is only in one doctrine atm? |
Something else I wondered is: doesn't the Molotov have a wrong role in this game?
It's primarily anti-infantry in the game, but AFAIR the Molotov was invented as an alternative to AT because AT was in shortage (it was used to throw at the engines air intake). |
This is kind of crazy. You HAVE pios allready.
And btw. the SU player needs to be just as carefull because his 6 man squad can dwindle in battle to 3 as fast as a 4 man grenadier can.
I do understand where the OPs question is coming from though. I have read a lot in this forum about some players still thinking the german faction is at a disadvantage because grenadiers only have 4 men - as opposed to the 6 men of the conscripts.
It's a basic misunderstading of the balance between grenadiers and conscripts IMO. And that misunderstanding is now just repeated in a new context.

I don't like it either and it certainly hasn't done any good to tank spam.
In COH2 you can't limit the enemies fuel like you could in COH1. It's pretty redundant to fight over fuel now since players can just build fuel caches on strat points anyway (plus the opel).
End game has become like American football: two blocks of armour rammed into eachother and then someone drops the ball. Where's the finesse and tactics? |
I don't see the point in introducing a weaker infantry unit at the same cost as a grenadier. But ofc. the suggestion points to the fact that grenadiers may currently be underpriced. So if grenadier Price is increased, a cheaper alternative should be made available.
At a different note, I think some of you guys are talking about different units.
Volksgrenadiere saw action from 1944 and could be included.
Volkssturm, otoh, didn't see action outside german territory and were more like militias. |
