You could go t1 and not be forced into taking a Guard commander. Only thing is, I know Relic wants the Penal Battalion to be a suicide squad not a Ranger (elite infantry) clone. The change would fit the meta well but I can see Relic not wanting to change the design intent of the unit. I hope they do it though. In: COH2 Balance
Thread: Radical T0-T1 Restructure Proposal:29 Oct 2013, 04:27 AM The problem with Penals isn't their timing, it's their role and perhaps cost. They are an expensive main line infantry unit that still gets beat by LMG Grens. The Flamethrower upgrade encourages going in close meaning the Penal squad is going to take a ton of damage due to it's low armor. The flamethrower upgrade needs to go and get replaced with either a light AT option or a DPS boost capable of countering LMG Grens. Either that, or give them a muni upgrade "body armor" increasing armor. But hey, I like your out of the box thinking. Clearly, Penals (and T1 in general) could use a hand. In: COH2 Balance

Or are you saying early Penals has been a problem and they need to be pushed back in relation to the gren spam? If that's what you're saying, well, I'm confused. Penals are hardly used in this game as is. Making them come (relatively speaking) later isn't going to help anything. This is a very odd notion. Or perhaps I'm just missing something here. Seems to me, you just don't like Ostheer having to build a building at game start when the Soviets do not and really has nothing to do with Penals. In: COH2 Balance

Thread: P2W whine thread. 25 Sep 2013, 16:02 PM I think they could of avoided a lot of this haterade if they'd released just one of their promised additions to the game along with the DLC (say Observer mode). This way Relic could point to the DLC and say see, it's micro purchases like these that allow us to continue improving the game. But, nope. They passed that option up. It's the idea of an incomplete game cashing in on it's fans that is so repugnant to many people. And they totally hosed the CE folks. Hosed 'em good. haha. In: Lobby
Thread: P2W whine thread. 25 Sep 2013, 15:35 PM It's very telling that Relic would release new game content without even balancing it first... It definitely makes me wonder who is running the show over there at Relic? Certainly not someone who cares about the company's reputation. I don't like pay to win but I get that's what Relic opted for at the outset and we're following that path. Okay, if you're game is good enough I'll overlook it and keep at it. But, what is so concerning is Relic is obviously spending resources (programmers, artists, etc) on cashing in on DLC when the game is not yet complete. Ladders, Custom game lobbies, chats, observer mode, map designer, etc. should ALL be finished before stuff like this comes out. Hell, at least give us some of it. If you're going to treat us like prostitutes could we at least pretend we're high class call girls and not $10 crack whores? Show us some class Relic. In: Lobby

Thread: Spotting Scope on Elephants17 Sep 2013, 22:11 PM I think it's fair to say that most people would prefer long range sniper units to be different than spotting units. Allowing the elephant (or su-85 or anything for that matter) to spot for itself is just missing a great opportunity for synergy. In: COH2 Balance
Thread: Panthers17 Sep 2013, 21:23 PM Nicely reasoned OP but I think there are a few things you're missing. I play 2v2s so I can't really speak on the 1v1 front but in my experience the Panther is an awesome tank. The OP describes how the Panther matches up against the SU-85. Same damage and penetration with about half the rate of fire but the big difference here is the Panther is fighting weakly armored Soviet tanks with no turrets while the SU-85 has to match up against the frontal armor of heavy German tanks. That may sound obvious but its a really big deal. SU-85 penetration: 170 vs Panther armor: 270 Panther penetration: 170 vs SU-85 armor: 180 In comparison, the Panther has a better Penetration vs frontal armor match up. Combine that with the Panther's higher health and it's pretty obvious that the Panther beats the SU-85 handily when engaged in a frontal slugfest. Time to Kill @ range 20: Panther shooting SU-85: 28 seconds SU-85 shooting Panther: 42 seconds But, because of the far superior maneuverability of the Panther (better acceleration, better top speed, blitz, turret) over the SU-85 (focus sight slowness) the Panther should be able to attain a flank against the SU-85 and get hits on it's rear armor which changes the numbers drastically. SU-85 penetration: 170 vs Panther armor: 270 Panther penetration: 170 vs SU-85 armor (rear): 80 And of course, once the Panther gets close and forces the SU-85 to rotate, the SUs rate of fire will go down significantly even to the point of not being able to fire. That turret vs no turret match-up is a big deal. Those time to kill numbers hold pretty steady throughout the range brackets except for range 50 where the Panther's time to kill edge increases sharply (up to a 19 second advantage) and then at range 60 where the SU-85 finally sees it's first advantage, outside of the Panther's gun range. Even so, it still takes a full 63 seconds for the SU-85 to get the job done. With all that said, units don't fight in a vacuum. There's a whole battle raging out there right? Well, beyond the tank destroyer vs tank destroyer match-up there is another really important distinction which should be pointed out. The SU-85s biggest weakness are PGs with schreks. German Infantry based AT is a serious threat to the SU-85 and can kill it in just a couple of salvos. The Panther on the other hand has no trouble with Soviet infantry based AT. Guards' DPS rifles (doctrinal only) are pretty weak and the Panther has a good chance of resisting AT grenades. So, while the Panther can't do much against Soviet infantry, the reverse is also true. The Soviet infantry AT arsenal doesn't have anything that can directly harm the Panther. Now, is the cost just right? I don't know. I think the jury is still out on that. I personally need to see more games before I can make that determination. But I don't think anyone can argue with the unit's performance. It's a beast. In: COH2 Balance
