You need to learn to read between the lines, alot of people who whine about certain things whine because they can't afford it. People whine about all kinds of things and the bottom line is they usually don't want to spend more money than they have to.

What makes you think someone that bought CoH2, has a computer capable of running it, and internet fast enough to play it online can't afford DLC commanders? I can afford to spend $10 on a McDouble at McDonalds but I'm not going to because its only worth $1 and that money could be spent on things that actually earned its price tag, like a meal at Five Guys. Don't charge a premium for a second rate product. |

In CoH you only have a maximum of 3 commanders you can take into battle to choose from. So the "pay for more variety = pay to win" argument isn't really as straight forward as that, both players take in 3 different commanders for different factions. If you're talking about mirror matches then it makes more sense but who plays those?
That was true for the original DLC commanders (the ones included with CE) since they had all the same stuff just shuffled around differently. But the new ones have entirely different content. Even though you can only choose 3 per game you will still have access to tactics that don't even exist without the new DLC. IMO its advantageous to have a larger pool of strategies even if its perfectly balanced against the core commanders. |
It's not relevant when trying to determine the value of the product. A core component in a product can be relatively cheap to replace, whereas another component can be quite expensive but it's valued by consumers.
Think about fluro lights on a desktop computer. They're not necessary to run the computer, but they can be quite expensive considering the only value they add is aesthetics.

Not true with all games. In fact many titles have used small, cheaper expansions rather than packaged DLC (which often contain many features people do not even want). The beauty of the model Relic are doing right now is individuals can pick and choose exactly what they want. I don't like that commander, but I do like this other one. Great, you don't have to spent $12 for them all, I can buy each one I like individually. Never before has the gaming community had so much control over their purchases. In the past it has been bulk DLC and expansions full of shit people do not even want (I don't care about campaign or ToW) but their new model allows me to not only pick the area of the game I want improve, but the exact commanders and units I want right now. This model is actually a good thing for the community, but you people are too stupid and blind to see it.
This is probably the closest you've come to a coherent argument, but no matter what you buy individually it is still 400-500% overpriced. The ToW pricetag is the only one that comes close to its actual worth, or what the vast majority people are willing to pay for it.

You do realise % of total cost of game is irrelevant - I don't know what point you were trying to make there. It's value for price. Is each commander worth $3? Well, that's for the consumer to decide, and as far as I'm concerned that is well worth $3 out of my pocket (and other players who purchased these commanders obviously agree).
Total effort spent on the creation of the product is also irrelevant. How much effort do you think it takes to produce an iPad in a factory? Minimal. But people fork out hundreds of dollars for them (FYI - apple products have one of the highest mark-up prices for technology).
What's my point? The point is % of cost of another product AND effort used to create the product are completely irrelevant. It's the value of the individual product and what people are willing to pay.

Importance vs % price is very relevant. A CPU can cost 20-30% the price of an entire computer because it is the most critical component. But in terms of computers, a DLC commander/skin is about as critical as a mousepad. And btw your entire Ipad argument is flawed because you only compared the manufacturing process and not the materials used or the design process. Even just comparing the manufacturing process you are still wrong because a good chunk of CoH2 sales were via Steam and therefore there was no manufacturing.

The consumers of the video game industry have already determined a year of DLC for a single AAA title is worth $40-60, the chances of your opinion changing that are slim to none. So yeah, L2economics and try your hardest with your next reply so I don't tear it apart in 4 minutes.

I can't believe you people. You're seriously complaining about having to pay $12 for FOUR BRAND NEW commanders and units? They've been out for a few days and people are screaming 'P2W!!!!

You do realize that $12 is 20% the cost of the entire game? 20% of the total cost of a game with around 12 hours a campaign, a similar numbers of hours worth of ToW, however many maps we have now, and 2 factions. The amount of effort that went in to making 4 more commanders is <1% the amount of effort that went in to scripting the missions, making the maps, designing/balancing factions, programming the engine, designing the unit models, designing the UI, designing the menu, etc. Think before you speak young grasshopper.

True you don't have to buy it all, but that doesn't justify the outrageous price tag. Even if the new commanders were perfectly balanced its still an advantage to have a more versatile selection. The CoH2+DLC total 3 months after release is about $180 (not including faceplates). The BF3+Expansion total over the full 2 year span was only $120. This isn't just slightly overpriced, its borderline highway robbery. Don't pretend like that is acceptable, there is nothing wrong with holding them to some reasonable standards. |
As long as the new commanders are balanced this has nothing to do with "P2W". This is just "pay to do something different", and that is totally fine.
It is true that the new commanders are not completely balanced. But what did you expect when they add something new to the metagame?
A patch will come out in some days or few weeks and will address all issues. I find this hostility so boring. I love the idea of new content. New commanders as DLC bringing new units and new strategies to the table is awesome, and I am more than fine to pay for that.
If the new DLC commanders are OP it is P2W. When they balance them after the fact, they fucked over everyone that bought them because they were OP. Its a lose-lose for Relic. |
