4. ZIS Gun - two of these combined with mines, at nades and t70 vision keep any realistic amount of medium armor away, they also severely limit Axis ability to use support weapons aggressively and offer significant late game wipe potential both thanks to the broken barrage ability
7. Pop Cap - 100 Pop soviet army straight up beats 100 pop OKW army, 100 Pop Soviet vs 100 Pop Wehr is at least equal in strength and way easier to play
10. T34/76 - Way cheaper than P4 but does the exact same thing, direct battles between the two rarely ever happen anyways and even then T34 isn't much weaker, very easy to reach critical mass with these
14. 7men cons - nobrainer update that can be easily afforded most of the time and has no real trade offs and makes it almost impossible for Soviets to lose infantry late game
4. every double at gun set up murders mediums, nothing special. the at gun rating depends alot on the targets you have to fight and every at gun combos well with mines or snares
7/8. ost t4 just doesnt straight up beat usf or soviet stock late game armies, thats just not true. "only" the brumbar is op
10. you can make arguments for other medium tank, p4(j) best raw stats, sherman HE shells and smoke, t34/76 cost effectiveness
14. most upgrades are no-brainer: 7man cons, obers lmg, guard dp, bars etc etc

Now now, Katitof stated that all 3 weapons are UP, yet you are telling me that people use them. I would agree with you on this. Every unit has a possible use ingame. Some are better, some are worse. It's about the composition. As far as I am concerned the support Trio might be the crutches needed to drop the T70 as jack of all trades. Worth a thought I guess.
Katitof is right, M42 suffers vs Ost T4 play and OKW T3, Dshka has the worst deathloop in the game and heavy mortar’s barrage is bugged so only autofire is useful. M42 and Dshka however are very useful vs Osttruppen builds since Osttruppen absolutely cannot clear weapons teams so Dhska is safe and M42 can keep early LV away and poke with cannister. They also allow you to delay teching up for some time to counter the early Osttruppen power.
T70 is not a jack of all trades, it’s the soviet faction crutch. Any build that doesn’t include it is missing out on a faction crutch and is thus worse in comparison to a build that uses it.

How about a T1 opening supported by the doctrinal dshka, m42 and the 120mm mortar? This would enhance both AI and light AT during the early and mid game.

I think some more explanation is in order. Why do you think it's the worst possbile option? Tell me. Pls be more open minded without saying "people don't do this and people do that". I would like to remind you that HelpingHans brought us Ostruppen with a very specific tactic and it works.
HelpingHans was a top 3 player and won a major 1v1 tournament. Not sure why you bring him up to support this proposed build of yours.
T1 is a dead tier, you basically rely on your opponent messing up in order to equalize the game. You’re very far back in map control early and get badly outnumbered, Penals are 0 help vs light vehicles and with your build and a sniper after the 2nd penals that’s basically a sniper at around 6mins in while you’re dying to a flame HT and you get hardcountered by a 222 because your only AT is a conscript squad and mines. Also no zis gun cuz you went T1. |
CE T1 Cons Penal Penal AT nade Sniper Su76 might be the worst build order you can do as soviets.
There’s a couple people who still play dead T1 on ladder in lv17+, miragefla who is quite experienced, Rajan and Skeletron who go techless M5 with lend lease doctrine on top of M3A1 start. I don’t think there’s a sniper into su76 guy on ladder, since the su76 is pretty trash and the t70 is your faction crutch.
Only decent alternative is to stay in T0 with a cons build and an M42 doctrine and gather fuel until teching straight to T4 for a T34/76. |
1. Osttruppen - Insanely strong vs Soviets and USF early game because you badly outnumber them early and rapidly pivot into mid game LV and Pgrens. Capable combo with sniper vs UKF.
2. 5man Grens - VSL Grenadiers are the strongest mainline in the game. As allies you always need to outnumber them in order to win engagements, and even then G43s can chase wipe.
3. Extreme firepower - Rifle grenades, machine guns, bundle grenades, flamethrower halftruck. There’s no faction in coh2 with the extreme firepower Ostheer can bring to the table, obliterating dozens of enemy models in mere seconds and making a complete mockery of squad sizes. Rifle grenades are also bugged half the time and then have no warning or animation, adding insult to injury, and are basically guaranteed wipes vs yellow cover squads. Flamethrower halftruck completely dabs in the face of soviets with their clumped squads, slow healing, slow rof AT gun and late T70 play.
4. Pak40 - Top 2 AT gun in the game, able to stun vehicles at vet 1 and combos perfectly with 400 damage Tellers and 19 range Grenadier fausts. The high penetration, rate of fire, stun and long range fausts basically means 2 pak40s can shut down medium tank play hard, especially considering the paper armour on stock Allied medium tanks. Only the Comet can stand up to double pak40s.
5. 222/251 - Extremely useful vehicles, 222 is amazing at flank patrols and early pressure, also offering AA vs recon and cheap inf detection. 251 either gets flamers and deals insane damage or acts as a forward mobile HQ wifh troop transportation, healing and reinforcing. Not to mention schu mines.
6. S mines - Can wipe entire squads if placed on retreat paths or areas of low traffic where opponent will run a squad over them and lose it within seconds.
7. Tier 4 - Ostheer T4 straight up beats stock USF and Soviet armies and only has issues vs Hammer tech UKF. Even then the Panther beats the Comet 1v1 so pivoting into a Panther after a P4 counters Comet stall nicely as long as you are ahead, otherwise just straight to Panther.
8. brummbar - Absolutely amazing unit that can clown allied comps with low penetration platforms and is generally a huge problem to deal with.
9. Sniper - God tier unit, absolutely clowns the entire UKF faction in combo with vet 1 222 for immunity to countersnipe. Cannot be countered by any faction in teamgames without missplay by the user and pure luck, or high skilled high luck countersnipe if ost player doesn’t inf detect properly or loses 222.
10. Panzer IV - 2nd best stock medium in coh2 after P4J of OKW, beats every allied stock medium 1v1, great anti infantry, gets 234 armour at vet 2, blitz at vet 1 for super survivability and has pak40s and 19 range fausts backing it up.
11. Pgrens - stock minute 4 elite infantry from HQ at 0 munitions investment with techless bundle grenade and vet 1 combined arms. Insane unit.
12. MG42 - Best machine gun in coh2, spam incendiary rounds to nuke everything lighter than a medium tank. Becomes straight up broken with camouflage doctrines.
13. Spotting scopes + Elefant - Break teamgames entirely.
14. LMG Grenadiers - nobrainer update that can be easily afforded and has no real trade offs compared to unupgraded Grens and makes it almost impossible for Ostheer to bleed manpower from mid game onwards if used properly |
Obviously a Maxim is the worst machine gun in all respects, even when compared with the allies. 50.cal suppresses better, has slightly better arc, and has a faster deployment speed. it can also fight vs light vehicles. And Maxim is just shit !!
