It's not a daft idea- it's what COHO was implementing. You had to decide what bulletins you wanted, and what part of the Commander tree you wanted to develop.Albeit many decried the COHO system, I think it was more sophisticated than the Commander system we now have to deal with.
Ofc,Relic had a play-to-win system with some units, but most posters I knew never had to bother with buying anything (although COHO only ran for a shorter period than the current game) bcs you could win elite units by chance- purple, from memory
It was said- I never believed it - that COHO was unpopular. Well, it certainly was unpopular with the "Pros" - the sh*t you see bandied about here for CoH2 was just the same for COHO, except the whiners - the disentitled - could only complain about paying to win - they could not complain about the fact they could play the game for free.
3v3 and 4v4 were well supported, and the Relic Official Forums were much busier than they currently are.
COHO had a first class caster in the form of Harlequin - eloquent, committed, numerate, and a premier entertainer and communicator.
And do you know what? Relic threw it all away....under pressure from the vCoH Pros.
That's why, IMO, Pros only get a limited hearing now from Relic. Too many vCoh Pros-and wannabePros are often self-obsessed, full of their desire for a superior fame -and make no mistake about it - they see the bulk of players as necessary for target practice, as well as bolstering their leaderboard positions.
When I first joined GameReplays 4.5 years ago,I came across"Smurfs Honour" It took me some weeks to realise that this meant a "Pro" was smurfing - and winning - and would have to concede a game he was to winning, so the losing "Pro" would not suffer a leaderboard loss.It was corrupt. But if you pointed it out, the mods jumped on you.
vCoH was a hard game to master -but enjoyable- yet it never had popular support until the humble bundle, when players could spend little cash to experiment and lose(often)
CoH2 - I think - is an attempt to rectify the imbalances in skill levels and wrest the game away from the "elite" and their kling-ons- the wannabes.
If only Relic had had the confidence to realise their COHO commander system was not as bad as the raging Pros suggested.............

Thread: Predictions for announcement from Noun during SNF7 Dec 2013, 16:41 PM
More than likely new commanders that are about to grace us with their presence are again going to make the game unbalanced. : I hope not, but I like your sense of humour! I too hope that they lay off the DLC and focus on game balance and improving the game rather than adding more units and abilities via new commanders. Amen to that. Logically, we should expect them to correct the excesses of the previous commanders, before introducing any more. Although here, I have to say that (IMO) the Soviet Industry on its own is not so much to blame, but rather the ineffectiveness of the Elite. i.e. with Soviet Industry, the T70s take the edge of the paks, the KV-8 fries the pioneers obtained in expectation of the Tiger, a mere T34 rams the poor Tiger rendering it next to useless, and the KV-2 rolls up for the glorious finish. The Elite have an enormous gap before attaining CP7 for a 3 Star Tiger. I think one way to remedy this might be to cut off the 3 star vet and reduce the CP for Tiger to 6. Then get rid of one of the "holding" levels like Jaeger Light Infantry and sub it with a Command Tank at CP4. German mines should also be no more difficult to lay than Soviet traps, but I don't know if that creates further balance issues. But anyway here are my predictions: I think they should now swap the least used free Commanders, for some of the others they are developing, and leave the DLC for infantry skins or tank skins In: Lobby |

Thread: What the PRO's think of COH220 Nov 2013, 22:08 PM
I have read through these pages with interest. The phrase "The view was better from the plane" comes to mind, as I try to envision (dread word)the mindset of many of those who landed in Vancouver, on a guest pass, fully paid. I highly doubt if many of those who visited Relic (with apparent relish) will receive a return invite. What is the point of feeding the hand which bites you? Would you,as an CM, like to answer to the SEGA CEO (or his minions) and say why? You might argue that it is better to have the disentitled in the tent pissing out, rather than on the outside pissing in. But many of the disentitledd seem already to have made their own choice. There is a discipline lacking on this site. It is a site apparently set up to support CoH2. Very well then. Let it ostensibly be so. I fully accept that behind the scenes, there may well be representations about the evolution of CoH2. But I do not want to come here and resd incessant negative bleatings from the disentitled. I do not want this site to be used to perpetuate a self-seeking minority oligarchy. That is what CoH2 set out to dissemble. If you did not understand that, then you read the pre-blurb with rose-tinted spectacles. I have always understood it to be that CoH wanted a wider player base, which was not so inhibiting for a novice to master. In this way, Relic,as a non-charitable institution, might seek to profit (in a way that the original game never apparently did) and keep its new game alive(and its studio), with balance patching based on new sales of skins, commanders etc It therefore makes no commercial sense at all, to me, that some here on this forum and recommend the destruction of CoH2, believing in their wildest dreams that the powers-that -be will revert to vCoH and produce a further patch. You think I talk nonsense? OK then. Tell me,if you reply, how SEGA/Relic will make any money at all by scrapping CoH2 and patching vCoH. It is a pipe dream, nothing more. . Unless, ofc, you advocate making people pay for the new patch for vCoH, by refusing them entry to vCoH unless they pay. Can you hear the howls of (mostly) North American anguish? " I paid 50 bucks for this game. I aint paying no more" " This game aint FTP. I paid $50.00 6 years ago. I expect full support, for free, till the day I drop" In your wildest dreams! Put simply, (for the simplest): you will not be able to continue your muscling. You either accept reality, muscle down, accept the bad with the smooth and await a good outcome (which will come) and tone down your acerbic comments. or else push the game to the point of no-return and lose the whole damned lot. Are you that nihilist? Some of you, I regret, may be so In: COH2 Gameplay |

Thread: DLC pricing. #Milking (Ranting and Suggestions)13 Nov 2013, 18:42 PM
what's the big deal already( unless the issue is what you got with your collectors edition, which does seem disappointing to me). +1 And I highly doubt if many are buying new face plates either. The best argument I have read for pricing review, is that new entrants to the game may be put off by the accumulated high price to play catch-up. But as others have indicated,a price slash on the older versions will put paid to that fear. For myself, I foresee that continued addition of Commanders has to slow down, since the Commander icons (until this patch) are simply too confusing. If I had to guess, I would guess that the next dlc target will be infantry skins. I don't have an issue with that. In: Lobby |
Thread: How I feel about paid commanders.10 Nov 2013, 18:45 PM
Con!, Memories can be short, Dave, judging from this post of yours. I have underlined your rightful(IMO) criticism about Roos for this purpose: vCoH was dying. It had little support from Relic, bcs people paid once for the game, and then :full stop. No dlc to maintain income. And yet, people like you, it seems, expected a fully supported game in vCoH for a one-off payment only. That was more than absurd, and so it proved. After the Roo debacle, vCoH was eventually patched (very late) in or about May 2011(?) under the volunteer efforts of primarily, Kolaris and Mora Failes, but that was as much by luck as by judgment. The 2.602 patch only materialised bcs of the abandonment of COHO, and the requirement to keep the vCoH community intact,if possible, until a new game could be released. The plain fact is that reliance upon a single payment for a game and then expecting it to last (fully maintained), like Buzz Lightyear to infinity and beyond, is unrealistic. .................. Guess who is in charge of this game? The track record simply isn't there. Nothing that they have said or done in this game thus far has been anything to the contrary of a big fucking letdown and this is about to make it even worse. Mark my words:the original team are apparently responsible for transferring your fave of all time onto Steam...it is not yet done,as you very well know. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Now for some comparisons in RL: if I go to a provincial restaurant in my country, dinner for 2 will cost me far in excess of the Stalingrad TOW and add-ons; so will 3 pints of beer in London; or the cost of 2 to see a film at the cinema. Stalingrad and its add-ons will (for me) be slightly more than the cost of 20 cigarettes. Do you see the point? Get real, FFS In: Lobby |
