But the question remains...why are barrels entities? And could shooting the hell out of them grant you xp?
COH2 will clearly be giving gameologists mysteries to ponder for many years to come.
The depth of the game is just unparalleled.

I'm only posting this because I am so angry it took this long to beat a stupid ass Maxim/arty combo. I mean fine, you can take out the trucks. Fine, you can just come back with more Maxims after I beat off the first 10-12 because Soviets have more manpower than prostitutes have STDs. Fine you can stand in green cover for days with Brit squads because green cover bonuses were such a good idea to make the game more tactical and exciting. Fine you can make me play until I have all vet 5 squads, a fucking Panther and a King Tiger and I still can't close the game out because the fucking arty is raining down like the fucking monsoon in Cambodia and THERE ARE MORE FUCKING MAXIMS. Oh and please press the Artillery Cover I-Win Button on my King Tiger when you've already lost because why the fuck not. In: Replays |

Honestly, it is a sprawling mess at this point, COH2 always lacked vision. I can't remember what patch it was, but right around the time of the Tiger Ace of Doom, things felt pretty good to me with minor easily fixable things such as the T70 and of course the Tiger Ace call-in itself. After they did that major patch that basically increased damage across the board, things started falling apart. Suddenly because models were dying left and right, and moving around the map became much harder, every little unit imbalance was magnified 2 or 3x. And when you talk about mechanics, I think a really key thing for gameplay that no one talks about is how capping is done in COH2 vs COH1. The fact that you could cap with set-up support units and that units were still combat effective while capping is the butterfly flapping its wings that eventually causes a hurricane because of the ripple effect. Blobbing becomes more necessary because it's the most efficient way to capture territory. Overly aggressive MG play becomes viable, and so instead of looking at this, now all factions have access to excellent MGs as a result of the arms race. The game pace is accelerated and the cat & mouse game is gone. Also, the game sucks because Relic forgot how to do asymmetric balance somewhere along the line. Instead we have a game of hard counters, lacking depth. Ie., scout car instantly counters Kubel, AEC/T70 instantly counters Luchs, LMGs counter SMGs. People hated fire-up in COH1 but it was actually a good example of how you could asymmetrically balance infantry (paratroopers/rangers vs vetted grens/MGs) without resorting to DPS arms races. The game actually gets a little more interesting late game in my opinion, because the tanks are better asymmetrically balanced (though I agree the Panther still needs help.) In: Lobby |

Montargis would be marginally better if they'd left the fuel points where they were in the original. The ammo hill was always problematic...If Axis held it they could come back with vet eventually, Allies less so. Moving the fuel there was just stupid. But yeah it seems cramped and the half-built wire I miss the sniper wars in the middle from COH1! In: COH2 Gameplay |

I mean in COH1 team games if you survived the Allied onslaught, vet 3 Axis tanks would eventually win you the game. It did happen in 1v1 too, but rarely. You just couldn't afford the vet in 1v1, not because of a lack of fuel, but because of a lack of manpower. There was the ever popular defense/med bunker strat that did get to vet Panthers occasionally because you were getting numerous zombie grens. It was always acknowledged Axis had the better late game whereas US was much stronger early to mid. It was just part of the game and the community generally accepted it, whereas in COH2 everyone seems to have had much more of an issue with that design, mainly because Relic always said they were trying to balance across the entire length of the game. I remember quite a few Montargis games where Axis was literally pushed off the map, with not even a fuel point and we managed to claw our way back with vet. That was annihilation mode though. Great post. One of the biggest changes that had unintended consequences in COH2 from COH1 was to allowing capping in a circle instead of on a point. That made it a much bigger deal to cap a point. You couldn't just blob across the map, you had to clear a position then take a point and have the 30 seconds to cap it with a squad that wasn't combat effective while capping. I think they could fix a lot if support weapons simply couldn't cap. The new capping system made the game faster-paced, but made blobbing a lot more effective to take territory. In: COH2 Gameplay |

And in the larger sense, it's a slap in the face to the tradition of COH, which was originally about maneuvering, flanking, and cunning micro and tactics. All you can do is bomb it, or waste a lot of manpower assaulting it. It lowers the skill cap of the game by its very existence. It makes skilled players mad because their skill means nothing since any noob can throw up a Bofors and it will take only slightly less time for a top 10 player to get rid of it then another noob.
