Do you really think I went wrong with the LGA 2011 and the x79 motherboard and it's not worth the extra coin. I figured I can throw a new chip on it in a couple years. I was told the 1155 wont be available as long. If not I feel like I could have gotten a bit cheaper with the 77 Sabertooth. I sure love the sabertooth and the i8-3820. Great chip. I went for a full tower instead of a mid just to give me that extra space for my 12 inch GPU. I usually go for the best of the Maximum PC best lists in my price range. The 3820 got honorable mention and I plan to replace it in a year or 2 with a nice unlocked chip when i can afford to upgrade. The Samsung 830 and the Evo cooler were on there. I got the Sapphire Radeon 7950 OC Boost and threw it in a Cooler Master Storm Trooper full tower. Sweet case with a lot of customization.

Just wondering what the biggest downside for the LGA 2011 is. Besides price and performance correlation. Was the guy (my bother who has a biz building PCs) wrong about future chips coming out in the LGA 2011 and the Sabertooth giving me a good platform to build on for a few years. I'd love to throw it in his face. He did save me about $400 on some parts and a few RMA's he gave but just wondering. You didnt go "wrong", just spent money you didnt really need to. The x79 platform's downside is:
-Expensive Motherboards
-Expensive CPU's ($500 is the first unlocked CPU)
-No performance gain over Z77 platform in real world scenarios

X79 wont be around any longer than Z77. Its the usual Intel Tick-Tock release schedule, Nehalem Tick, Lynnfield Tock, Sandy Bridge Tick, Sandy Bridge-E Tock, Ivy Bridge Tick, etc etc.

Poor Symby. I once got a snide motherboard myself. Frustrating? Not half....

If it's any consolation mate. When it was all over it didn't seem that bad. I learned something and felt more confident under the hood. Everyone is going to get a shit deal occasionally and now we've had ours.

Incidentally. I've recently acquired a touch screen laptop. Been rather surprised at how good Windows 8 works with it. Can MS really be getting a clue?

Saying that though I have absolutely no intention of upgrading my desktop to Windows 8 even at the cheap introductory. If I was thinking of building a home rig I'd install a copy of Win 7 now while I still had the chance.

I went 7 even though if I had waited a week or 2 I could have gone 8 but I'm thinking it still has a place. Got my daughter a touch screen for Xmas with Windows 8 so I'm interested in how well it works or not.

What about Ram disks/caches? Anyone know much about or recommend them. I got 16 GB now in quad channel on my 8 dimm Sabertooth x79 and I'm looking at adding a 32GB quad channel and taking out and using the 16 in another build. Then I might add another 32GB for 64 total later so I am interested but only know what I have learned and read. Nothing practical or actual experience. I know I don't need that much now as 32 would be wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overkill but I'm gonna be using it for some design/rendering and a lot of software other than just CoH2.

Not sure, might have had something to do with electricity leaking (not sure how it's called in english) because once to tried to boot the motherboard/cpu outside the pc case, it did worked, after that I put it togehter again with a few extra screws to keep everything separated from the case and then it worked all fine

I've been lurking here for quite a lot, I have 1 question tho. I'm wondering which procesor to get, both the i7 3770k and the i5 3570k have integrated gfx in them, which, since i'll be buying a GTX 680 i dont need. Why shoulnd't i get the i7 3820 processor and since its cheaper than the 3770k i'd buy a good cooler for the money instead? (3820 doesnt have integrated cooling)

People recommend the i7-3770k. Now i'm bazzled.
People also recommend the i5-3570k, but you have to OC it, which i am not casual for doing, because I do not have the experience with doing that. If going for i5-3570k, people recomend i5-2500k instead :F

I'd get a SSD hard drive if I were you (why do u need 2 TB anyway ?) I just got the i73820 myself and it works fine, but most say it's not the best one for gaming (I also need it for film editing/rendering)

I don't need a SSD hard drive, since I wont be doing much with the data, and they tend to cost a lot. SSD doesn't improve gaming, just makes using data faster, which tbh, I dont need, since I wont be having that much changing data on my comp.

You won't be changing the Data yourself, but a lot of automated processes in your computer does.

Something that is very recommended is spending a little money in an SSD where you'll be storing your OS, and/or high-end games. That way, your games will load faster, and any background stuff that the OS has to do while you are in the game, and must be written to disk, will be much, much faster.

...of course if you have a ton of RAM that's a little pointless.

Nuvion, you NEED an SSD bro. It's speeds up EVERYTHING. There's no better way to speed up windows boot, shutdown, and software load times. Plus loading games/maps or huge software like photoshop is on turbo on an SSD. There's nothing better you can get for your machine, trust me. SSD is the BOMB! An SSD will massively improve your gaming experience.

BTW having a ton of RAM doesn't help you. All that does is allow you to have many huge programs open at the same time. The info in RAM vanishes when you shut down your PC, obviously. Every time you want to use your RAM, you have to load the info into it first. From where? From your HD. If you have no SSD HD, you're basically fucking yourself. You want a super fast HD and enough super fast RAM. Then you're in business.

He is right, though. SSD is only getting cheaper, because they are getting larger and larger. The ONLY true disadvantage SSD has over traditional HDD's, is that they have more limited read/write numbers, but its an insanely large amount, that you probably won't run out of in like 7-10 years, by which time you just upgrade.

The advantages? VERY fast speed. NO moveable parts, that means the disk doesn't have to spin up and also you can't accidentally bump your computer and mess up your HDD's (it can happen, especially with external drives!). SSD gets like a 15% to 50% speed increase depending on what its doing (booting up, launching an app, or running the app)

IMHO, money is always a big factor, but I'd rather wait another month or two to get the money, than risk a performance loss or even regret it and upgrade earlier than usual. I spent about $1600 building my current rig, but that was in 2007! I've only had to replace one fan, and thermal paste once! Its now time for an upgrade, but $1600 in 5 years? Thats like $27 bucks a month!

if you're not going to overclock your cpu, you may want to consider getting a intel xeon e3-1230v2 this is basicly the server version of the i7 3770 but without the intergrated gpu and it can't be overclocked. It performs similarly to an i7 3770 but it's cheaper. It should work on a socket1155 (ivy bridge) motherboard.

Just get the 3770. Most motherboards have the onboard graphics connections and may not work well with the Xeon solution. You can disable the onboard GPU in 10 seconds in the BIOS. It does come in handy sometimes though as well.

My GPU once overheated (I live in a tropical place)and was having a lot of issues. since I didn't have access to my onboard graphics solution, I was stuck with a dead PC. Luckily I correctly assumed the thermal paste had dried up and was able to reapply and fix the issue.

If I've had access to my onboard GPU, I could have saved myself two weeks of wasted time and CoH. It simply helps you troubleshoot some issues as a last resort, and sometimes, money depending on how computer savvy you are.
