Stug should have same range as the SU85 and then nerf stug speed to same as the SU85.

But yes Stug are worth it if you can damage the engine on soviet tanks and get close enough to fire the first shot on SU85 (especially with vet1 stun ability). That way they cant move back from a fight and cant flank. But you can still move back your stug to save it.
Gren spam usual force your opponent to build at least one Katyusha. So you could have 2-3 Stugs out before a second SU85.

Same thing with the tiger, damage the SU85 engine first or not worth it..

P4s are kinda all-in against a supported SU85 with Cons AT grenade. Even if you kill one SU85 a second SU85 will usual kill your remaining P4s with engine damage. Against two or more SUs are very risky and require pro micro.

STUG is worth it if you had a tough early game and your enemy is pushing out t70's / t34's.

If you know that your opponent is going SU85 and skipping T3 (through scouting, etc)
Dont go for STUG.

Usually its just better going for a P4, the fuel difference isnt that much of an deal anyway.

Yeah only time i see it being a life saver is if you catch the soviets pulling a t70 out, and manage to catch it.

Stug is worth it now. The situations to include it are obvious - against enemy armour, when you want to save fuel.

A good tier 3 army for Osteer vs Tier 3 Soviets is to get a P4 followed by a stug

I'm having good successes with Stug. They can face up the SU85 in a vacuum. With veterancy, they own it. Against an adequately supported SU, less so.

Pick your engagements. They are assault guns, and are well-suited to the role. Good siege tanks against base structures. When supported by your army, they can cause some serious MP & Fuel drain. Vulnerable to artillery / command abilities. Two stugs + P4 highly effective. Stugs sit back and lob rounds while P4 harasses & attracts fire. Good for a rush along the straightaways. Don't get caught out of position, and stay away from forests, buildings, where you can be easily flanked. AT guns present a problem.

With Stug bulletin 8% increased armor penetration, approx. 6% higher chance to penetrate SU85 frontal armor. Combine this with officer Inspire (accuracy:*1.15, reload:*0.85) + Stug vet1 ability and they can stand up to SU85.

It's not a counter like pak43/elephant but at least Stug have a fighting chance against SU85 with that combination.

As mention by the balance designer Peter during the last tournament, lategame stugs should work well with the tiger vs soviet T3 and heavy tanks (KV8/IS2).
The balance problem is that SU85 currently have both superior range and speed vs the tiger so that combination are only good vs T3. The tiger need either a speed or range buff vs SU85. With range buff tiger should get a speed nerf so they dont become OP vs T3 which need mobility + mark target as counter vs the Tiger.
Once the tiger get a buff vs SU85 I think we gonna see more players build 2 Stugs + tiger + officer lategame or Stug + P4 + officer + pak40 midgame.

I have been having better luck with Stugs against all Soviet armor as of late. It seems to be a decent hold the line type unit.

There are two somewhat large caveats, though. The first is that you absolutely cannot let a SU85 reach vet2, at which point it just shreds Stugs. This is generally true for SU85 but especially vs Stug due to low HP. The second is that you have to get a Stug to vet1 quickly and start using its ability every chance you get.

"The Shocker" is very underutilized but very powerful. Besides simply holding them in place, it allows you to get two shots in where normally you would only get one. The stun shot itself followed up by another free shot while they're stunned. Due to timing the 3rd shot generally comes in faster than it normally would, giving the Stug a sizeable DPS advantage in a 1v1 engagement.

Once it hits Vet2 the survivability becomes normal and you won't have to be popping smoke every time anything fires at it.

its a hard counter to soviet t3. does very well against kv1s, kv8s and t34/85s too. not too reliable against is2s but 2 or 3 can take one down if only the is2 doesn't get too lucky with shots bouncing off its front armor, which you should expect. su85s and isu152s hard counter this thing, but also keep in mind this thing is faster and has better rotation than those two so you can use this to flank them if you can distract or catch them off guard.

oh and its vet 1 ability is awesome. its a guaranteed penetrating shot and stuns enemy armor. great against is2s and when you manage to catch an isu152 or su85 off guard.

The ninja nerf to Stugs this last patch sucked (targetsize from 14 -> 20). They were at a perfect position prior.
