The M1 Carbine is a fine weapon. It is lightweight and easy to shoot. It has a detachable box magazine with 15 and later 30 rounds of the potent .30 carbine round. The Carbine, however, is not an infantry rifle. It was always meant to replace the pistol as a self defense weapon for gun crews, machine gunners, officers truck drivers, mortarmen and anyone else who would need a weapon, but who's job was not frontline fighting.

History lesson over, now let’s talk CoH2.

I think the relationship between the various forms of the M1 Garand users (Riflemen vs weapon crews) and M1 Carbine users (REMFs vs Paratroopers and Rangers) is unrealistic, confusing to the new player, but also easily fixed.

Proposed change: Keep all unit stats the same, but give Paratroopers and Rangers M1 Garand models and give all weapon crews M1 Carbine models.

End result: An easy way to tell if a unit is good or bad in direct combat. M1 Garand rifle equipped troops are skilled infantrymen by trade and perform well as such, while troops equipped with M1 Carbines are support troops who are less effective with their individual weapons.

(And before anyone says that Paratroopers should have carbines because they’re Paratroopers, you’re just plain wrong. Paratrooper INFANTRY (as depicted in the game as “Paratrooper” ) almost always carried M1 Garands even on jumps. Read the book, “US infantry weapons in combat” if you would like to hear about what actual WWII and Korean War veterans were issued, trained with and fought with. Seriously, it’s very interesting.

Interesting, very interesting!

I agree with you, except paratroopers. IMO they should keep Carbine due to it‘s more compact and comfortable to drop with from the plane.

I was planning on doing this in my mod however it would have been very time consuming for me because of how weapons can be given to entities or "infantry models" whatever you wanna call them in terms of modding.

So yes I fully support this change.

And I think that Paratroopers having a mix of M1 Carbines and M1 Garands and 3 upgrades to Thompsons, M1919A6s and bazookas is also a good decision and fits them historically.

The M1A1 Carbine to be exact was meant for Airborne because of the metal buttstock which would be pulled back to shorten the weapon when jumping and so forth.

While the Rangers used M1 Carbines again because of their smaller sizes compared to the M1 Garand, and believe me when you had an MG42 shooting in your general direction on those beaches you needed a shorter weapon which could still pack a punch and allow you to be effective at medium range rather than the M1 Garand which could prove as a liability.

Having the M1919A4 and M2 60mm mortar models be given animations wouldn't be bad either tho as well, you can even see the models in the world builder already and the M1919A4 could be seen in Artwork for CoH and in the AA trailer for CoH2 which was kinda ironic because like I said, it's model is in the game but there is no animation.

If you're going for historical accuracy switching the M2HB .50 cal for the M1919A4 .30 cal would make sense because only a body builder would be able to lump around the Ma Deuce like the guy in the game right now.

In this game
M1 carbine Close range and mid DPS better than M1 garand
Support troop use M1 for litte protect themself like Weapon crew Mp40
what Dps profile to use it Rear echelons 10 dmg but Low Acc
or better but not compare Para and ranger Carbine

next Elite Infantry
Ranger Role now it Assault troop and have addition choice upgrade 4 Thompson for boostup Close Dps or use BAR for boost up Close and mid DPS
if change to garand not problem now
Paratrooper With Thompson no problem too
But problem is on Paratroop With Dual M1919A6
This upgrade can allow because Other Squad member use M1 Carbine Not good Far DPS it mean Main Dmg for Para Lmg form only M1919A6
and Change to Garand mean Squad have more Far DPS Boost up
Another OP Topic coming soon

I’m loving the discussion that this has created, but I want to pump the breaks on some of the historically accurate changes like the 60mm mortar, 1919A4 and other changes. For this to work, it has to be limited in scope and not effect balance. So, no new animations, no new stats, no new weapon models. Just cosmetic changes that better reflect historical use that also serve to indicate the role and effectiveness of troops.

A note on paratroopers with carbines. Yes, they are much handier to jump out of a plane with, but an M1 Garand was actually what the jumped with UNLESS, they were a weapon crew or specialist that would’ve had a carbine anyways. Infantrymen, whether they be paratroopers, Rangers or just in the good old infantry, had M1 Garands. Very few men preferred the carbine as a combat rifle. It just didn’t have the punch that the M1 Garand does.

The M1A1 paratrooper carbine was issued to paratrooper weapon crews and other support personnel like bazooka teams and MG teams, although many of them used standard M1 Carbines as well.

Regular paratroopers get M1 Garands, but switch to Carbines when they upgrade to LMGs or bazookas to show that they are in a weapon crew type situation, and also switch to Carbines when they upgrade to Thompson SMGs to show that they are in a CQB role, that the carbine was preferred for.

Thanks for the positivity in the replies. :)

Well, if we're fairly honest the M1919A4 would work the same way as the current. 50 cal altho have less of a punch, which would prompt a decrease in it's price probably but that's it in terms of balance, at least in my opinion.

As for the mortar, if it stayed as it was before the new patch notes it would purely be a cosmetical change as you said, but with the new stats bringing it in line with the other mortars there is little reason to do it now, but I think that anybody that mods would still appreciate the new toys to play with and I honestly don't think it would be that hard on Relic's part to just adapt the current animations for the models, it would also be an easy way of sorts to introduce new commanders if they're going to do that.

I always found it amusing that they carry 50 kilo/ 99 pound paper weight around.

I hit the gym for about 3 years and I can carry such weight around but for like minutes tops. Even Schwarzenegger would need a break in his prime time after lumping it around for like 2 hours.

I think adding the M1919A4 in as either the standard US MG or as a paratrooper doctrinal call in to replace the .50 cal drop would be cool, but I don’t see it happening. Personally, I’d like tonaldo see a light AT gun replace the M1 57mm AT Gun as the paratrooper dropped AT gun. I think it would fit the flavor of airborne better and also not make it a way to skip tech. It makes it a trade off. If you want an MG or AT gun right now, you can drop one, but if you want the standard and better .50 cal or M1 ATG, then you still have to tech. Although I would rather see the .50 cal buffed and moved to a doctrine and see the regular non-doctrinal US MG be the M1919A4 .30 cal.

This is of course all just hypothetical and beyond the scope of the original poll anyways. :)

But it seems like almost everyone wants to see the M1 carbine take its rightful place as the US support weapon crew individual weapon, so let’s push to make that happen with the Spring Balance Patch!

Also, more discussion on the M1 Garand replacing carbines in Para squads and Rangers until they are upgraded. I like it for clarity, realism and flavor, without changing any stats, ie, no rebalancing anything at all, but I see the poll is about 50/50 on that, so sound off in the forum and support your opinion! :)
