MG gunner still getting sniped

Why is this still a thing? The number of engagements ive lost against mainline infantry due to the mg gunner getting chain killed is attrocious. Combine this with yellow cover everywhere and mgs stand no chance. Not to mention USF mortar... I feel the AI options of the axis is sorely inadequate atm...

Often the MG gunner stands in front so all models engage him because the range is shortest between the approaching squad and the MG. I am unsure if you can actually order a squad to manually target a model, this does not appear possible with the sniper.
