Mortars should cause abandon on tanks with exposed crew [...] I think this would add a new and interesting dynamic to gameplay, and give mortars and other artillery more late game utility.
How can for example Jackson be abandoned when the driver sits inside?

Everyone will get injured and/or will flee, while the driver will curse at them, of course. Eventually, he will exit the tank too, smashing his cap to the ground and he will leave the map with his hands on the pockets blabering something about game mechanics.
