Haswell refresh or Skylake?

I'm thinking of building a new rig and I'm on the fence here. First I thought of building it with a Haswell refresh CPU (probably i5 4590 or 4690), because the only two Skylake CPUs that Intel had released where the i5 6600k and the i7 6700k, and I'm not gonna OC. But I just checked and they've released plenty of new Skylake CPUs.

Question: Is there any reason why I shouldn't go with Skylake?

If you don't want to overclock, there is no sense in purchasing a K version of any cpu, since the K means they are designed with overclocking in mind.

Just get a version without the K, that has the most desirable speed for your needs. Wouldn't focus to much on the i5 vs i7 debate, Intel recently releases the i5 6600, a beast on its own that can match any i7 apart from perhaps the top model.
Whenever I face USF as OKW, it feels like I have been strapped down into a mental hospital wheelchair, with legs that can't reach the floor to move myself forward and a nurse is trying to move the wheelchair backwards whilst I have to race a formula one car for a best of three laps.

It feels handicapped from the start

Not OCing, that's why I didn't think of Skylake when there only were the unlocked i5 6600k and i7 6700K. As you say, the i5 6600 looks great, that's why I'm thinking of Skylake instead of Haswell refresh now.

Yup, I was not going for an i7 anyway, it's an overkill for what I need/want the CPU.

Well, where I live, 8 gigs (2x4) of ddr3 1600 are around 50 euros, while 8 gigs (2x4) ddr4 2133 are around 60. It's not that much. So if that is the only reason, I'm definitely going with Skylake instead of Haswell refresh. Plus, ddr3/4 compatibility comes with the chipset. I could go Skylake and ddr3 if I were to buy a B150 chipset mobo. :)

Yup, I don't know about h110, but I think it's ddr4. You might wanna check it too ;)

In general the H series boards have always been the lower tier, made with cheaper components, and therefore a slightly lower price. Other things such as NIC (Intel instead of Realtek or other), sound (generally better onboard sound chip), and extra ports are a difference that you will also usually see moving up to the higher end boards. You can get the entry level Asus Z170 for $115 USD.

I guess what I'm saying is there is more to look at than just what chipset number is on the label.

Just saw that some h170 mobos also support ddr3, so it seems that it comes down to manufacturer's decision, at least when it comes to h170 chipset.

Me too :D and I'm not planning on changing my 2500k to anything else soon, I'm still in love with that cpu :blush:
