COH2 is about number 56 in top 100 games of steam
RTS above it 4 Total War titles, Europa universalas; lol Age of Empires 2 HD editon
COH2 player stats
Last 30 Days 4,404.4 -577.6 -11.59% 8,459
I really love the franchise, but these numbers are horrible. I am surprised there still is support. VCOH gets 1800 players a day.
I hope they deliver on these big mysterious improvements. Just to give it reference COH2 has sold over 400,000 copies. So they have retained 1 percent of players.
How long can it last with such a small player base?

Personally, I feel this is should be outside of your area of interest as a player.
If you enjoy the game play it and tell your friends. If you don't then don't, but it's not your job to worry about how well that game is doing economically etc. That's Relic's job and you have no control over it.
I've become invested in games and mediums of entertainment in this way before and all it did was frustrate me and make me bitter (something already in abundance on these forums) but now I realise that it's none of my business (literally) and now I just chill out and enjoy a game of CoH when I feel like it.
The people with the power to influence these things also have the most incentive to do so (Relic, Sega, etc) so we can assume they are doing the best they can in this regard.

coh2 has a steep learning curve, most buyers just give a shot at the campaigns, try 1/2 multiplayer games, then leave it there for eternity.
Don't delude yourselves, even with great balance and Relic support those figures would be marginally higher.

At a guess I would say there is roughly 14000 - 15000 active players, yes it isn't great but it isn't terrible.

Most likely due to coh2's terrible performance (fps wise) and relics indecision on what coh actually is. If they could just commit to say make it more competative then it would most likely lead to more streamers and tournaments and the word would be spreading and an increased playercount would happen.
But yeah with terrible fps, a very stale meta for atleast a year, a joke for a ladder system and warspoils that don't work i think 7000 average peak numbers is fantastic. That just proves how good the concept and potential of company of heroes really is.
The observer mode is really a big step in the right direction but that should have been in the game at day1 among other still missing features.

No.
Not even close, another case of skipping math classes and not being able to read numbers right.

Use www.steamcharts.com
Coh2 is definitely not smaller than Coh1 or AoE2.
But I agree the player numbers should be better than they currently are. Still needs some good polishing patches so that maybe we all stop whining about it and our friends don't get put off

When I only describe basic mechanics of CoH2 to my friends, they are like WUUUUT??? Relic has done a TERRIBLE job advertising their game. They can't event generate hype for their community.
It's not too late, they just have to rethink their advertisement methods. The game still looks fantastic after 2 years (Visuals) and people have more powerful PCs than they had 2 years ago.
