Yeah, Windows 8 has a lot of UI decisions that I find infuriatingly unusable, but the underlying OS is a nicely refined version of Windows 7. With Classic Shell installed, I find 8.1 quite reasonable. Still think it looks ugly compared to Aero though.

I never had any VRAM problems in CoH2. I played the game on some kind of mid settings with 1GB GTX560TI and now I'm playing some kind of high with 2GB GTX760 and it uses slightly over 1GB of it. In fact other games are much more VRAM consuming right now (f.e. Rome 2 or WoT) so in such company CoH2 can be even considered low VRAM consuming game.

It would be wiser to use AA off and do your AA in NVIDIA control panel and set to like CSAAx8 (which is +/- 4xMsaa)
The AA in game besides Low uses SSAA to increase the resolution and downscale, don't use it

Plus you will see basically no difference from low AA to high AA at those resolutions. Basically just throwing away FPS.

I would have done if it was my benchmark. ^^

Relic could have gotten better avg fps reviews if they put the AA name in the gfx options instead of low medium and high

Most reviewers know SSAA and MLAA is junk on performance

Yes, you're right, it's always useful to have details (as we say in french : ça ne mange pas de pain). ^^

Snow to lowest detail helped me a lot to have a better performance in the game.

Update: Added a much-needed index for navigation. Indents didn't work unfortunately, but it's still usable.

(Apologies if this is irrelevant, just thought I'd post this in case it helps someone else.)

Nice guide! I hadn't thought to try a few of those things, like performing an error check.

Unfortunately, it didn't help in my case. What really did it for me was changing "terraindetail"'s value to "1" in CoH2's configuration_system.lua file. Everything else seemed to have a negligible effect on performance, but after making the change my fps skyrocketed and panning the camera no longer made the framerate dip horribly.

I'm not sure why this is; the gpu was the only part of my system that was ever pushed to its limit. Everything else like cpu usage, system ram, and vram had a fair amount that wasn't being used.

But it works, so I'm not complaining. :P

Edit: The chart I've been using to tweak configuration_system.lua values is about halfway through this video, if anyone's interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RxLkc1OrRM

you should add the Nvidia inspector Tool profile for COH2 and also D3DOverider to enable triple buffering (great for vsync performance)

Interesting. I'll look into that and find a spot to add it, thanks.

I'll check them out, thanks!

Edit: I notice that the Nvidia Control Panel has triple buffering as one of its standard options. That'd be better to use than D3DOverider, surely? (For Nvidia users, anyway)

As a system admin for many years I can tell you the most overlooked things are simple updates. Windows Updates, Driver Updates, BIOS updates, you name it - get the latest version of it.

Finally got around to adding in system updates :) Thanks for the tip.

Nvidia control panel Triple-Buffering only affects OpenGL games, D3DOverider forces that but on DirectX
BTW only use triple buffering if you have enough VRAM for the game + some more left because it consumes more VRAM in exchange to better performance on Vsync (renders a 3rd image in memory buffer before displaying), on normal vsync if your card cant keep up the game fps cut to half, however with the triple buffering it doesn't
