It's not criticised for Play to Win per se

It's criticised for the other reasons listed

Personally I don't mind the war spoils system, at least you'll be a pro with the base commanders by the time you get a rare one. It would be better for tournaments if everyone had access to all the commanders,although the commander rotation helps with that.

Unfortunately, it is though.

Just goes to show you cant please all of the people, all of the time.
Many have raised the concern that they actually want to be able to buy them, and that "playing for them", doesnt reward their "casual and for fun" mentality, whatever that means.

I agree though that more rational posters support the latter critique, and me among them too.

As to studies on reward/punishment incentive systems, they are being misrepresented and misunderstood.
I guarantee you, that if I place a gun to your head, you will perform atleast as well, if not better, than if I offer you 1million bucks

Totally not what I was talking about. I'm talking about the effect of adding a system of rewards ... and how it can reduce the inherent value of an activity. I don't know why people keep bringing up negative reinforcement - the point I wanted to raise is that positive reinforcement by itself can create unintended side effects.
