The 21st Rifle Division were blocking the way to a beleaguered German Garrison. And the 3rd Panzer Division were the only unit on hand able to break through and open up the supply route again.
Not to get them out of there mind you, just to get them sufficient supplies to keep fighting.

The Men of the Panzer lehr had been marching all night. There were no Halftracks or trucks available to aid them in their mission. And the Panzers were not to be encumbered either to conserve on fuel.
But up ahead they could see their target. A town vital to the allied supply lines. Held by men of the 8th Infantry Division.
They were not ready for what was about to hit them.

Elements of the 2nd SS Panzer Division were in the process of fortifying a small belgian town waiting for reinforcements.
In a bid to halt that the 2nd Armoured Division launched a full assault with whatever they could immediately muster

Stürmbannführer Wolf had to make the attack with what he had at hand. Which did not include a lot of Panzers. Mostly infantry with some support weaponry. And before him was the 3rd Armoured. Fully equipped with tanks and whatever it needed.

The 23rd Panzer Division was stuckholding a small village as it had run out fuel and was awaiting resupply.
Stavka finding out about this launched a full assault in the hopes of wearing down the 23rd Panzer Division completely.

The Road to Mink had been forced open and the 10th Mechanized Corps was pushing ahead through the remnants of Army group Centre. The only thing that might stall them were elements of the 13th Panzer Division that were re-organizing and counter-attacking.

The roads were crowded with tanks and infantry marching forwards. The 128th Rifle Division had been under attack for days by the 13th Panzer Division and relief was on the way.
On the other end more troops and armour was on the way as well.

The 1st Infantry was in complete dissaray. The frontline had been broken, the regiments folded before the onslaught of the Panzer Lehr. Rapidly the rear lines were combed for units to halt the tide while reinforcements were dragged in from elsewhere.

Books, the internet. different sources. Can range from biographies, to organisational charts, to more general history, divisional histories. And the list goes on really. It's a wide variety of sources and such i go through to gain a broad idea of things and thusly be able to understand them in depth.
I mean just take this webpage. Just completely focused on French halftracks that were converted into armoured halftracks to be used for the 21st Panzer Division in Normandy :

So it's nothing quite as straightforward as a recommended reading list really.
Artillery rained down on the british positions. And had been raining for hours. The Germans were doing their best to soften the positions by the river crossing before launching the assault.
The British hadn't been able to bring up much artillery in the sector and so lacked the ability to respond. But they did have a few other things in reserve that could turn the tide of battle.

With the germans in control of the river-crossing after the previous days assault. Armour was scrambled for a counter-attack. The Germans could not be allowed to hold it.
Tanks, air support and more infantry was put forwards to force back jerry towards Berlin.

The flank had collapsed and the central supply centre was exposed. A hasty counter-attack with the Kampfgruppe Meyer was launched to buy time to rebuild a defence and to shift the supply centre further back.

A way into the Ruhr District had opened and the Guards Armoured Division was pushing through it.
But waiting in the distance was the 12th SS Panzer Division. Recently reinforced and refitted. Ready to show the British who were the masters of the battlefield.
