There was this MG42 in vCoh worldbuilder called MG42_atk_ground or something that could attack ground(could suppress and all that)
So its possible. but like people have stated it would defeat the purpose of smoke

If they allowed attack ground on MGs, you'd need a mechanic to keep people from just continuously firing, like requiring ammo resupply. Dumb idea, if you ask me...

There is a mechanic for that, it's called attacking from literally any other angle except the one it's shooting at.

Still a dumb idea, even just for playability reasons. Can you imagine playing a game where the sound of MGs was totally continuous?
And overlapping mgs, or mgs pointing in opposing directions could only be countered by indirect fire, a US or Sov truck with flamers, not normal flanking...those situations can already be quite tricky on some maps.
I wouldn't mind overheat now if they buffed the MG42 in some other way...be kinda fun and add a tactical layer to the game. You can already wait for a reload though if you happen to be in the area to count the 4 bursts, which is quite a long time and really rare to be able to pull off in normal gameplay.

Instead of attack-ground how about giving HMG's a manual reload ability.
