Valve explains how CS:GO became the second most-played game on Steam

Tournaments, though, have produced the most substantial upticks in concurrent users, presumably due to the fact that CS:GO allows players to watch competitive matches in the game client in real-time.

Just so you guys know, CS:GO was far from getting CS 1.6 (original CS) or CS : Source (Second CS) numbers even 3-4 months after release. Now it has more then double the numbers of those two games put together.

I have always said this, developers always think this competative scene is tiny and not worth investing in, when infact its the competative scene that drives the casual crowd aswell.. casuals arent competative but its the competative scene that draws them in and keeps them interested.

Anecdotal evidence to support that: I bought vCOH after reading a magazine(!) article review but had no interest in competitive multiplayer, and the campaign didn't hold my interest so I stopped playing.

Much later some link to a tournament cast caught my attention and I was so hooked by the action and (importantly) the commentary explaining it that I bought OF and dove into multiplayer, then COH2 when released, bought skins, etc.

I've been saying this forever, it's not a coincidence that most of the successful multiplayer games these days have thriving competitive scenes and developers that support them in one way or another.

Nice article, thx for the link. The e-sports potential for COH is there... that's what we've been hoping for and working towards for the last 2 years. Hope it comes to something.
