Vehicle Scopes: Useless?

Hey all,
I was wondering whether the doctrinal scouting scopes on vehicles is a worthwhile upgrade -- whether in your opinion or if there's some kind of quantifiable stat that suggests they are.

Basically, I'm bouncing back and forth between Jaeger Armor and Fortified Armor as my Elefant commander, and scouting scopes are one of the doctrinal abilities that has me questioning.

Thanks!

If you use units as forward observers, it makes little difference in the fight. Likewise, if an enemy unit reveals itself in the distance by shooting something of yours, it doesn't matter that you have a scope, because you could see the unit anyway.

Placed on a vet 2 scout car, they can give you line of sight to almost all the way to the enemy base on an open map such as langres.

Placed on the elephant, the elephant can scout targets on its own. Add hull down and it's a pretty powerful armor destroyer at very long range especially if you have them overwatching a choke point.

The same can be done to a pangther to increase it's range, but panthers are better used on the move unless you have a couple of extra's. In which case, you've probably dominated the game already.^_^

On any other unit, they have limited to no use at all since most armors in the ostheer arsenal are used on the move and should seldom be stationary.

That makes sense. I should've made the subject line more about the doctrines themselves. I'm torn between Jäger and Fortified –– the stuka bomb is nice, but I'm also a huge, huge fan of the smoke.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Scopes are great for sniping in big maps (like 3v3).
And also, an elefant with spotting scopes outranges everything.

It doesnt outrange the ISU152. The scopes adds Line of Sight, not range...

Yea, but it's range is longer than it's LoS.. unless you have it focused, I believe.

I guess everybody knew that, scope is a really good device for Elefant and 222 as said before, Jaeger armor is my favorite commander, it counters howitzers and armor.

I wish it wasn't in a commander ability slot, though.

spotting scopes are essential, just like the 3rd Mg.

They extend the tanks' forward vision by double and protect the tanks.

I love spotting scopes, and I used the Mechanized Doctrine quite frequently.

They're good, but they don't work when the vehicle is moving, so keep that in mind when you're deciding where you want to spend your munis.

Im my opinion, I use them all games and if they were working when the panzer is moving, maybe they would be a bit OP.

But spotting for itself is allowed on a non doctrinal SU-85. Thus I can expect that from a doctrinal ability.

I made the experience that scopes on an Elefant can be an annoyance. If it has to turn the hull to shoot at the enemy at maximum vision, the effect of scopes is lost and the vision is gone. The Elefant will then shoot and adjust its hull on something else that´s closer. The target far away has escaped.

Thats why I think the Elefant should have a mode of *No-Rotation* or *Only targeting tanks*...

Spotting scopes are very good - knowledge is power.

Elefants, stugs and panthers profit greatly from it.
