Tourney Rank vs Automatch Rank?

How come he es not beating up EVERYBODY in Tourneys.
I am not so curious about him as a person, but rather the question in general, what do you think is the main difference between a #1 automatch rank and winning a tourney?
Is it

endurance
performance under stress
feeling at home in a tourney situation
knowing your opponent
none of that, it is far easier to be #1 in all than win a ML
....?

1. Most A-tier players don't play much automatch. No matter how good you are you still need to put time in even if you win every game.

2. He smurfs. So he probably only plays on this account once every two weeks to prevent decay.

3. You can avoid players equally good or better quite easily in automatch once you've reached a certain skill. Just need to pick the right times to play/possibly check obs mode/check streams. If you play someone who is clearly worse than you enough times eventually you're rank 1.

This happens in other games as well. Been #1 in ladder is generally more a thing of a grind than been a tournament winner player. It can be COH2, SC2, WC3 or AOE2.

This doesn't mean he can't be good. I'm sure anyone top5 can defend themselves and achieve quarters regularly.

Tournament format plays different as well. You know which map you play and with which commanders you want to bring.

I'll add that the tournament formats have always been GRUELING weekend long affairs and that maybe isn't the most non-euro friendly thing unfortunately with time differences etc. There may also be a barrier to entry culturally, we don't get a lot of activity from our Asian players regrettably.

3. Playing probably games in NA time
4. Some of the best players don't play atm 1vs1 automach, bored of ostruppenmeta and mech. So they play custom games with new patch
5. Spam games
6. Automatch is also a little bit about luck
a) which map do you get
b) positon 1 or 2
c) playing brits vs wehr or okw etc
7. Cupgames bring always more nervousness
8. In cup games you have to play sometimes many games and long games at 1
single day
9. Abusing always the same commander, which is banned in ML
