Why are raketens immune to MG suppression?

This is one of the most frustrating things for me because it seems so incredibly stupid. Are all of the faction AT guns immune to MG suppression? What's the reasoning?

All AT guns are immune to suppression. The reasoning is that when you're suppressed you receive massive debuffs (and buffs) that hamper your ability to fire back. If you're in combat and your AT gun becomes suppressed then essentially any armor piece can frontally take it out, which is against the counter system design.
More importantly though, is when you're suppressed you have reduced movement and if you're pinned you cannot move your troops. It becomes incredibly difficult to pull your AT gun away from harm if its movement is heavily reduced. The raketen could theoredically avoid being stuck due to it having retreat, but back when the raketen wasn't immune to suppression it only had 50 range, so would run into MG arcs more frequently than the 60 range counterparts.
TL : DR
suppression makes movement very slow and due to lack of retreat it would heavily reduce the effectiveness of AT guns to the point where it would be almost frustrating to use.

Isn't the better balance option to give all AT guns retreat capability? Kind of defeats the purpose of smoke and tactical play to outflank an MG if you can just walk a rak right up the MG and wipe the squad.

Depends on your idea of gameplay. Currently AT guns sitting at 60 range and have reverse move instead of retreat is suitable for most. The raketen has retreat because it has less range and lacks a gun shield. You'd have to consider those as well when going for balance.
