Booby traps are pretty damn powerful indeed, could be overpowered if it wasn't on such a weak Commander. But you could avoid squad wipes by just making sure the unit isn't blobbed when moving into the cutoff or a fuel point. I wonder if mine sweepers might protect it from detonating.
It's also a shame you get incendiary Strike on the same Commander, there's no point having both. Any spare munitions would just go into spamming booby traps, let alone the fact that you are missing so many things that are absolutely fundamental and essential to Soviet play. Shocks, PPSH, Heavy tanks etc.
