Recap
Season 2 started off with a very smooth effort from all the 32 clans involved, with each clan taking part and actively reaching out to their opponents, to schedule their matches. I cannot thank the participants enough for being so involved in their matches.
We had many returning Clans from Season 1, Finntards, 37th Kokonut, Gold Path II, PFZ, Black Phoenix, Operation Black Shield, Immortel Legion, Ongoing Reunion, One4One, Blame Canada, and Tier 2. I want to recognize these Clans and thank them for joining for the second time.
The Semi-Finals
Gold Path II (Noggano & Cyrano) vs Team Skill (Alastor & Jove)
As Gold Path II moved through the brackets with ease, they wound up in the semi-finals once again. They had a pretty easy path all the way up to this point in the tournament, as they were getting ready to go up against one of the top 1v1 players on the ladder, Jove, with his teammate, whom is no slouch, Alastor. The matchup began with Gold Path II taking Axis in the first game, showing a strong presence as axis players, and became victorious in the first game. Second game Jove and Alastor had the chance at using Axis factions, and they became victorious in the second game, and they forced a game 3 (Ace Game). Gold Path II had VP lead which thus lead to them picking Axis in game 3. Gold Path II showed relentless counter player, as Team Skill just did not have enough in their tank to take down the reigning Season 1 Champions. Gold Path II emerged victorious in this series, and moved on to the finals.
Black Phoenix (Cactlosio & Jesulin) vs White Hydra (Theodosios & Thanatos)
Black Phoenix has become a renowned name in the Company of Heroes 2’s 2v2 scene, as they have a 6 man team working with different line-ups, giving each of their players a turn at playing throughout the tournament. This time, Black Phoenix was not playing around and picked up a fellow Spaniard, Jesulin, a very high level experienced tournament player. White Hydra on the other hand, is a team of two good friends, whom have been playing together since the launch of Company of Heroes 2. White Hydra showed us why they were the #1 ranked 2v2 team on the ladder, with both axis, and allies, throughout the entire tournament. As the two teams began the series, Black Phoenix had faction choice, and chose Axis. Black Phoenix rolled through the series, winning in 2 games, with each game lasting 40 minutes. White Hydra put up a fight, but it was not enough to take out Black Phoenix.
Black Phoenix moved on to the Finals, and they set up a rematch from Season 1, when Gold Path II had taken out Black Phoenix in the semi final of Season 1.
The Finals
Gold Path II (Noggano & Cyrano) vs Black Phoenix (Cactlosio & Jesulin)
The setting for the finals were on Moscow Outskirts. The teams had met before, in the first Clan Clash, during the semi finals. Gold Path II was ready for whomever Black Phoenix recruited, and showed no fear. Gold Path had the faction choice in the first match, and chose Axis. Cyrano taking Ostheer, Noggano using the OKW. Jesulin chose Americans, Cactlosio choosing the Brits. Game 1 started off with a bang, and Noggano chose the new 'Over Watch' Doctrine for the OKW. Jesulin went Tactical Support Company. He showed us the new 'Sherman Calliope' in a competitive scene, it has a devastating barrage, which Jesulin used relentlessly to pound on the German defenses. As Black Phoenix began to set their front lines, the axis started amassing tanks in their factories. Gold Path II rolled to the front lines with their strong axis tanks and began the assault. Black Phoenix was not able to hold the lines and lost control, showing many signs of what would be a great comeback. But to no avail, and Gold Path emerged victorious in game 1.
Game 2 was set, the map was Rails and Metal. Black Phoenix had Axis this time. Black Phoenix's chances were strong to force a game 3 (Ace Game), as the Axis factions had not lost a game the entire day. Jesulin went the Ostheer, Cactlosio the OKW. Gold Path II had the Allies, in a tough situation, on a map that some say would favor the Axis style of play. Noggano choose U.S. Forces while his teammate Cyrano went the British. The game got under way, Cyrano immediately went for a sniper, just what he is known to do. Jesulin made a sniper as well, but was quickly countered by Cyrano's play. Noggano kept constant pressure on the OKW player Cactlosio. Black Phoenix was eventually overrun, allowing Gold Path II to completely dominate the map, taking full control of the game. The sniper play from Cyrano and Noggano's U.S. Forces were just too much for Black Phoenix to overcome. They threw in the towel, and that was it. Gold Path II claimed their second straight Clan Clash Title, becoming Season 2 Champions.
The Players and the Community
Players involved in this tournament, showed the community how competitive a 2v2 event can be, even without a prize. And this tournament would not have been possible, nor a success, without the players being as active as they were. They and the community created the competitive environment by participating, being active, and training to get better. Building a competitive scene is not possible without this, and I personally thank all of the players involved. I hope to keep building upon the competitive scene that Company of Heroes 2 has to offer.
Stormless' Perspective
!The Clan Clash season 2 welcomed the return of some of our favourite teams, who most people may not have even heard of before season 1. After defeating RTN (Remember The Name), Ciez's clan in the last tournament, the stakes were high for champions Gold Path II in defending their title, as the elite 2v2 team in the game. The tournament had a minor setback with a patch just before the round 3 games leaving an atmosphere of uncertainty for the conclusion of the Season. We were, however, pleasantly surprised at just how exciting, back and forth these matches were! The players who continued to fight and support this tournament deserve massive credit for putting aside their fears and seeing the tournament through. Some great performances from teams 'Skill, White Hydra and Black Phoenix in the Semi-Finals showed us some of the new skills and strategies evolving in this new patch, resulting in a long awaiting grudge final between Black Phoenix and Gold Path II. With Jesulin replacing Kronosaur in the Finals, the expectations were extremely high for an upset to Gold Path II's title, but it did not happen. During the finals GPII won the first game against an incredibly strong allied game from BP, leaving the victorious push until the very last minute and forcing a surrender, to play game 2. The expectation here was that, with an already pumped-up OKW faction in the hands of Black Phoenix, Jesulin and Cactlosio would be able to quickly turn the tides and fight for VP faction selection in game 3. But, to the surprise of the viewers and ourselves, Noggano and Cyrano, using some incredible aggression and strategic decisions, put the nail in the coffin for Black Phoenix and took their second consecutive title in One4OneEsports Clan Clash! An amazing semi-finals and finals! Pleasure to cast and congratulations and thanks to everybody who took part and stayed positive throughout! |
