Could we send you a PM on twitter?

Great article, I agree with pretty much everything. You're totally right that fighting games are definitely the model to look at - waiting for some big huge company like THQ to swoop in and bribe people to make CoH an e-sport is just wishful thinking. Without spectator mode we're pretty much limited to replays, and I'm not sure how far the fighting game community would've gotten if everyone had had to sit around watching replays of games, but hopefully if CoH 2 is a great game then we can make something awesome happen.

It has worked out well for them because they have a different mentality to pc gamers. I'll go over that difference another time if people want.

I'm pushing for spectator mode ASAP post-launch, but (un)fortunately after the game ships, I have a 2-month vacation (Yay Sabbatical!) and so I won't be around to keep it going.

I would say keep pestering Quinn about this.

A good post. We really do appreciate the work you guys do to help get CoH into eSports status. I wish we had more time to provide support for CoH2 out of the gate, but I'm hopeful it's more of a case of 'when' than 'if'.

Thanks, guys.

when looking back at how CoH looked when released and how the replay system worked etc... i am very confident about that statement. i just hope we don't have to wait too long :-P

I wish CoH 2 will be a game like CoH, that have kept a community and being relevant 6 years after release. Even though it is not an e-sport, it shows how dedicated the community is to the game. :)

Ugh... in order to have a "big" e-sports scene in a game you need some requierements:

-Personalities and sick players. I think this is a green check for the CoH community.

-A decent/good game. vCOH does meet this requierement, CoH2 doesn't.

-Bigass player base. It would be debatable if CoH has a big enough playerbase or not. I think at one time it did for vCoH, but the techonology wasn't there just yet.

Conclusion? CoH2 has to live up to its successor, if not better. It has to live up to expectations. The way things are going so far don't make me feel like this is going too well, but we'll see.

^Nice necro. No, really! Because otherwise I wouldn't have found this nice article as I only found coh2.org a few weeks after this was written.

Great article. I am also a fan of EVO, its a very exciting time when it comes around as I get to watch some truly magnificent gameplay - the two games which I enjoy watching the most during EVO are Street Fighter IV and Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, despite being terrible myself at the games. Its amazing to see how EVO has come such a long way from its humble roots, to the huge event that it is now today, with much more room to grow. I hope that CoH2, and indeed the series as a whole, can gain such recognition and grow into a huge community of competitive players and spectators.

The latest SNF really suprised me. It really did. I was enjoying it a lot! It really felt like I was watching a huge SC2 tourney game or EVO match, the same feelings I got from witnessing crazy and exciting moments from the aforesaid events were again being felt as I watched SNF. Despite the issues CoH2 has at the moment, all the games that were cast, were very entertaining and action packed with each having its own fair share of awesome moments spread out between each game. The great commentating from Ami and Yoink, as well as their reactions, also added to the experience. Now, try and imagine a cheering crowd in the background.

This is a video from EVO 2004. I literally just got shivers watching that video again, hearing the crowd roar as Daigo manages to make a huge comeback! I know that CoH/CoH2 have the capability to induce moments of similar grandeur to the above video (although its a tough one :)) and I only hope that one day, it gets big enough to warrant a venue and a roaring crowd in the background. It may never get as big as the likes of SC2 but it definitely has potential when you see how great of a success SNF is.
