Its useful and usable exclusively for 4v4 fuckfests where players are of especially bad quality(sitting in their base until maxed pop with tanks).

I use it a lot and I think doing so is a reasonably important part of managing the US late game.
Generally I will go in, hit, pull back, get out, repair, order another Sherman whilst we are decrewed and reinforce Infantry, after the next attack the Sherman will have finished building and will pop out when we go below pop cap again

Shermans have to be committed en masse in late team games anyway so if you aren't using them right now - decrew them
