Now I know this is an absolute long shot... pipedream even, but it would be really cool to see different building types in CoH. I was just watching a game, watching a RUS flame penal attack a church built out of brick. Later in the game, I saw an Ostwind attacking the same building.
I couldn't help but think that the Ostwind should do WAY more damage against a brick building than a flamethrower should. Just as any explosive in the game should do more damage against a brick structure.
My proposal is this: divide buildings/garrison cover up into different "types" with different damage resistance qualities. I think brick buildings should receive less damage from flame weapons and more damage from explosive weapons (indirect fire, tank fire, shrecks etc), while wooden buildings take that same 1.25(or 1.5, i forget) damage bonus from flames, and have a standard explosive damage received from garrisons. There are also mixed/plaster buildings. Leave those as-is.
I think this change (as unlikely as it is to be implemented), could add a lot of strategic diversity, not only to gameplay, but map-making as well. Placement of buildings would be important, not only because of the number of windows and door placement, but the material the building is made out of. It would also greatly enhance the effectiveness of brick churches which, in my opinion, should be the strongest garrisons available. They should also be placed with great care.
Again, this would require multiple new types of "garrison cover", but it could add a lot of strategic diversity to gameplay - as there wouldn't be *one* direct counter to garrisons.
